best example of false patriotism
by Devdutt Nayak on Oct 05, 2009 12:21 AM  | Hide replies

the discussions here are the best example of false patriotism. When a terrorist shoots 5 persons, everyone cries out for all out war against Pakistan.

That would be fine if the same people shouted the same way for ministers and Babus to be punished for negligence the way technicians, doctors and medical staff in hospitals are punished.

Our politicians needs to be held accountable in VERY SEVERE terms for being negligent because they have far more resources and authority than necessary to perform their basic functions of ensuring permanent food, clothing and shelter for the entire population.

Nobody sees crime in these floods.
That is ample proof of false or misguided patriotism.

When there is no war, where does the motherland vanish?

Floods, famines, epidemics should invoke etremele strong reactions for governmental neglect.

If that does not happen "on a war footing", patriotism is false and useless.

What we do is actually violence, hatred and revengefulness disguised in the name of patriotism.

There is a 100 times more opportunity to "serve the motherland" in time of peace, than in time of war.

That we completely fail to see such an opportunity to prove our loyalty to our motherland proves that we are, knowingly or unknowingly, parading violence, hatred, anger and revenge as "patriotism".

As much hypocrisy as the politicians.
Think about it.

You will agree at least in part.

1. People need to be punished for negligence
2. Floods, famines, epidemics should invoke extremely strong reactions for governmental neglect.
3. Reaction must happen "On a war footing" for negligence
4. 100 times more opportunity to "serve the motherland" in time of peace, than in time of war.
5. Reaction for NonPhysical Inaction is needed more than Reaction for Physical action/violence
These are the notes taken from the above wonderful discussion

You are absolutely right. We Indians blatantly misuse and misintepret the word "Patriotism". If we truely are patriotic, we need to be discplined, respect the country's laws, be compassionate to our fellow citizens and do everything in the interest of the country. But unfortunately the poor fight for survival and cannot be blamed, while the rich (incl politicians)are greedy to make money for 100 generations. The middle class also fight for survival being trampled from both sides. The worst is that we do not have "role models" today for inspiration. All the popular ones hogging limelight are useless poltical leaders, cricketers and actors. The media also carries more news on useless unworthy people than the one who have contribted anything to the society or country. The result is we have become a directionless society where "BAD" has mostly won against "GOOD". These ruthless corrupt politicians leave no oppurtunity to make money and feast even on dead bodies (what will happen to the aid which will be received for the Floods ??). Leaders need to exhibit patriotism in real sense and inspire people. I doubt if this will really happen.

Crisis Management of Flood.

There are no boundaries for flow of flood water. We have so many disutes for sharing of water from the border states. Then why not the bordering states make plans to restrict water inflows. I appreciate you doing these actions to save AP

the srisailam dam, nagarjuna sagar dam & prakasam dam stood the test of time - now Central Water Commission must recast the topographic survey of catchment areas & backwater areas of the krishna river near the above mentioned dams of srisailam & nagarjuna sagar and near the krishna barrage for postarity - say for comming couple of decades - also same with the godavari river catchment areas & backwater areas near the polavaram dam site for renewed intensive studies keeping in view to rising of dam height issues and to increase the outflow of water from dam campared to inflows during any eventulities for I am riminded the godavari floods of 1977 & 1986 - point is dams in India must be relooked regarding their inflow & outflow capacities & upgradation of dam from choosing to go in for singular purpose dam or multipurpose dam - krishna floods opened the chapter to go in for fresh topographic surveys
& in designing of dams for time to come to face the vagaries of nature which changes over a period of time - opinions differ - putting forward my views -

Thats a good suggestion from Ilapakurti satyanarayana. May be Central Water Commission will definitely consider your suggestion.

And do not forget this is a high return period flood that has struck that is taken into considering while designing dams. I hope this does not happen frequently in the light changing climate claims, otherwise it is a serious issue to look again into inflow-outflow capacities of existing reservoirs or take additional precautions.

Thats a positive suggestion for managment of floods. Good Mr Satyanarayana
