Can anyone break down all these winners by north vs south indian or may be better by caste.
This way one can figure any bias by identity

This is my guess
SI - South Indian
NI - North Indian

Starting with Balu Natarajan (SI) in 1985 and including last year's title holder Mishra(NI), eight Indian Americans had won the title. Among them, back-to-back title winners were Nupur Lala (EI) and George Abraham Thampy (SI) in 1999 and 2000 respectively, and Pratyush Buddiga (SI) and Sai R Gunturi (SI) and 2002 and 2003 respectively. Other winners were Rageshree Ramachandran (SI) in 1988 and Anurag Kashyap(NI) in 2005."

That statistic would be of no use because the there are more South Indians in U.S. than North Indians. So, obviously there will be more North Indians. Also there are less number of low caste Indian Americans.

I think it would be interesting if we can get the same data for IAS/IPS/IFS people or may be leadership of major political parties.

Excel in more challenging work

I am happy for the kids but reciting the spelling of words is not challenging work compared to technical or research work. I very much wish the indian kids needs to concentrate on more challenging work than just be a "spell bee"

so, you want kids to do research? I think kids say that should be well...kids. Why should anyone make them do adult things? We should cultivate what interests them rather than impose something unreasonable. BTW, what makes you think learning how to spell thousands of words is not challenging. As far as I know, it takes lot of hard work and dedication to be able to do that.

Not sure of Indian community's obsession with the BEE
by Ram ven on May 22, 2009 04:45 AM  | Hide replies

It started as trickle. Now more Indian parents are in to this. The community is becoming compulsive about this contest.

Is it really such a good thing?

why not? It is better than just go around and partying unnecessarily. It is that attitude of Indian parents brought us up to this level and able to compete with kids around the world. Otherwise, we would have been roaming around in the streets. To do good things, you can be competitive and follow others. I don't see anything wrong in that.

Don't Just be cynical about Indian parents. some time I feel so happy and proud to see my friends and family around for the way the care about their children. I have seen parents taking their children to tennis, swimming, chess, football, baseball, basketball, music and so on. Wake up Ram.

by HisMajesty on May 22, 2009 04:07 AM  | Hide replies

Honestly this is the only show where you see desi kids and their torcturing parents. They deprive the kids of sports, arts or any other activities. Thats exactly why you never see an Indian kid in the arts, drama, sports or fashion unlike the oriental kids. Indian kids here are always timid, weak and pampered. That keeps the indian community off the mainstream culture in the US and even 3rd generation Indian-American is looked at as a "Desi". Point here is that there is much more in life than just becoming a Doctor, Lawyer or a software guy, so you pathetic parents stop harassing your kids and let them do what they want to do and be happy in life.

Thats funny. Cause the only one who made waves on Idol was Malakars' (who's mother is German or something) and the girl is hooters babe hot! But I give it to him cause he made the waves. Look at the chinese population in arts, music, theatre, sports or even the Idol show and compare that with Indian. Same with Media. I dont mean to criticize 'Indians' here dude, cause by heart and my blood I am all a pure Desi guy. All I mean to say is, that the parents should not try to force their kids to be Newton or a space guy. Let them enjoy the life. You dont have to be a doctor or a lawyer to be happy. You are born genious or you are just NOT, then why try to force Einstein into one who just want to be a normal kid? There is nothing wrong with being 'a normal human being'.

Jignesh and Jay,
Read my message again and try to understand it. I did not criticize the Indian community because they are doing owesome one one front (and one front only), which is making money. And we tach (force) our kids doing exactly that. But a richness of a community is not defined by money but the art and culture. If you looked at Jews, you can see that they run the US economy here but at the same time they are EVERYWHERE from music to theatre to art to business. And thats from pre WW-II. They prosperoured on every front. Anyway thats just my opinion.

By the way, if taking a personal shot at me makes you happy, then go for it. Me coming from hood (which is okay too), does not make you any better. So relax.

the full fledged drive to "not be a nerd" caused a whole lot of very smart people to become bankers and financial wiz-kids. We all know where that went. Stop putting these stupid labels and stop pretending that being cool is an accomplishment in and of itself.
