Philipps & Curtis 'Observations om Talibans
by D goel on Aug 23, 2009 03:36 PM

D. Goel , PKl., afternoon., 3.35pm,Sunday, aug. 23.2009.
Thetwo young Scholars are ,perhps swept off their young feet owing to failure the sub-text of current Taliban challenge at least in
Southern Afghanistan around Jalalabad and Kandhar. War-lords and free ethnic Militias
dominate the sorry scenario of contemporary Afghanistan its very divided tribal Chiefs.
President Hamid Karzai andAbdulllah Abdullah are only apparent leaders of Afghans ,and may be dispensed with the subterranean churnings of very violent supporters like Gen Dostan or Khalili in various outposts of that unfortunate country. D. Goel

Flawed Elections/flawed world/Utopia in Afghanistan
by anuj on Aug 22, 2009 05:10 PM

Elections have been flawed in India each time they've been undertaken. Some more, some less, but flawed they have been.

Even then, making a choice in India between elections and options of unified rule including central rule aka , say Chinese Comunist Party or Martial law aka many in the neighbourhood - most in India have preferred the former. The choice has been to have some opportunity. Not complete freedom or complete opportunity, but an opportunity at least.

Afghanistan with little history, can not hope to do a Westminster Democratic election. Neither does India, having practiced this for over 63 years. We can start a debate on Presidential/Federalism v/s other methods including more Centre and State basis probably, but other options beyond may not meet requirements.

The idea of utopia by an election needs to be given up - instead incremental change in mindset in our neighbourhood including the election in Afghanistan shoudl be welcomed, warts and all. Sure, feel free to point out the warts, though.Including the Britney Election Voter ID cards. Maybe in India we do not have booth capturing/duplicate fake cards ? Aren't we so GREAT ;-) ? Or if we aren't, give the Afghans a break.

Afghanistan's Elections
by anuj on Aug 22, 2009 03:54 PM  | Hide replies

I was very glad to see baby steps towards a dialogue process, than guns and force, in Afghanistan by this voter turnout. This is clearly a good sign.Unlike the American voters, who are overeducated and well fed, we in our sub continent have democracy as a different animal - one which looks at local amenities availability (water, schools, power, shortages, prices, corruption….)and further development of local areas, followed by nation building. I couldn’t disagree more with the British and American sense of democracy (they live in a world far removed from our sub continental hunger, deprivation and mock us for our ills and see us as a bunch of squabbling degenerates, while they are the blase, superior guys with all answers…and of course with the rich man’s burden. They come to see us/our poverty with wonder, tell us how we need to fix our problems with our families, our religions, our neighbours etc…. like i said over fed, over educated; but wisdom? That’s another thing).

The sub continent here has been blighted by bigotry and mistrust and divisive external forces. We have to find our own meaning of democracy and slowly root out mistrust and yet, live as sovereign neighbours with pride in our individual nations. We do need the democracy we understand (and the wise west finds appalling-god bless them though, as they spend more on their per capita toilet paper than our sub continent average person on food) and we can, over time, improve that too. A

Afghan polling 'marked by fraud'

Election observers in Afghanistan have said there was widespread voting fraud and intimidation during the presidential election on Thursday.

Stuffed ballot boxes, illiterate voters being told who to vote for and biased officials were cited by Afghanistan's Free and Fair Election Foundation.

This is a mainstream news....

Hopeless Afghanistan
by Vikas Kumar on Aug 22, 2009 01:32 PM  | Hide replies

This election was another example of hoax and to put a puppet government by USA same as in Iraq. First, they have no interest in terrorism; rather it is an excuse to intervene other countries' sovereignty. USA has almost destabilized Afghanistan and doing the same thing with Pakistan and we do not need to be happy; as USA is doing it for its own personal interest. Reasons:

1. By having military bases in Afghanistan, especially Helmend Province; gives it a strategic advantage in South-Eastern Asia.
2. This position is also important this place is closer to China and Iran too.
3. USA is making 50 billion dollar every year by Opium Production in that region at the cost of destryoing crops, peace, and youth too.

The echoes are very grim and this drug cartel is destroying the societies in all regional countries like Russia. We think that USA is our friend and ally; but remember, for oil, money, drugs, and military advantage; they can do anything, which might not be friendly to India; so India must pay close attention there and prepare for any emergency; or they might create a fake terrorist event to get the support of Indian.

My friend, i have not said that I support Taliban. You are not understanding the situation strategically. The coalition force do not have any interest in fighting Taliban; and they have no plan to clean this mess; rather to extend this grand game in disguise of terrorism. They (CIA) are the ones who created Taliban and Al Qaeda (name of a computer program run by CIA) to fight with Soviets. Do not get fed what MSM feeds.

Man, Ganeshan is right.
Gulf countries may not be poor but they will be poor in recent years. India was also rich in ancient times, but these western countries made us poor country, same will be the case of Gulf countries. Ganesh is right... Rules have become filthy rich due to these countries whom they made poor.

Let's hope this is the first step towards a properous future for the Afghan people who have suffered so much hardship. The Americans and many other countries are extending their full co-operation which is nice to see. but they should ensure that this time again they don't end up betraying the afghans and leave them to their fate....it is the collective responsibily of the entire civilised world towards them.
