SAINIK SCHOOLS AND FEES
by shanmugasundaramr on Sep 28, 2008 10:17 AM

The sainik schools now ask for more and more fees and the state governments in some cases are not giving the required scholarship.

this makes the parents to pay the largest share of the fee.

paying one time grants wont help the schools to reduce the free.
they are just twenty three in number and if the pay and perks and the employees are met by the central/stategovts as the case is with Kendriya Vidyalayas or the state govt schools, the education in sainik schools will become free.the matter is such a simple one and the people in control do not want to discuss the problem in this aspect for various vested reasons.
the only solution to the problem of sainik schools is to pay them teaching grants to meet the pay and allowance expenses.
In Tamil Nadu schools run by private trusts get the teaching grant and give free education to all children. But the TanilNadu sainik school is not getting the grant. The whole problem is messed up by giving scholarship to students.

We need Prime Minister / Finance Minister with Strong Conviction
by on May 13, 2008 05:50 PM

We all (including those in the government) understand and appreciate the message of MP's article. He has provided a thought about solution as well.
Who will bell the cat? A strong decision cannot come from a group due to obvious reasons including favoritism, corruption etc. All that we need is a fearless, sensible Prime minister or a finance minister who has strong conviction that human resource is the most important resource required by the Defense forces today.
Being an alumni of Sainik school Kazhakootam,Kerala, the undersigned can assure you that, at Sainik Schools children have been equipped with the most important OLQs (officer like qualities)like to have the right attitude, be fearless and be proud to be an Indian. They have been protected from the worst religious differences outside the walls of the school.
Come on, Gentlemen. Take a decision of your life now. Else, you will be portrayed to be an enemy of the nation more for your omissions than your actions.

Parents who can afford the fee of 55K not keen, Keen Kids cant afford 55k
by on May 13, 2008 11:35 AM

If the kids who come out of Sainik School are not too keen to Join the Forces, its because parents who can afford 55k for good education but not so keen leting their wards Join the defence are the onece getting there.
While Parents and Kids who could be keen may not be able afford 55k as fees.

Tokenism won't revive Sainik Schools
by Sudheer Parakala on May 13, 2008 11:02 AM  | Hide replies

Anil Kumar is partially right. Sainik Schools not acting as feeder units for the Defence Academies has nothing to do with the fee structure. There are tens of thousands of aspirants vying to enter Sainik Schools. Coaching centres for the entrance exams are mushrooming. The fee is pittance when compared to the quality of education and training provided by the Schools. I am from the first batch of Sainik School Korukonda. Admitted that there is deterioration in the standards due to raising costs. The actual deterioration is in the mindset. The youth today see a career in the Defence Services most unattractive. Thanks to the Bureaucracy, they are hell bent on destroying the Defence Services further. Sixth pay commission is a case in point. Coming back to the schools, in Andhra, the school has become an excellent place for quality subsidized education to coach them for EAMCET exams. Even if the student has enjoyed full scholorship, there is no enforcible contract for willfully failing to qualify in the NDA entrance exam. The whole problem started with change in entry level to NDA from Matric to 10 2. Earlier a cadet had three chances to appear before he passed out from Sainik School. The Principal had a little control. Now, a cadet scoots from the school after he appears for the NDA exam and wilfully fails.

The only way to control and improve the entry to NDA is to reimburse the entire cost of Sainik School education to a student who joins the Academy and NO FREE SCHOLOSHIPS.

I disagree with Sudheer Parakala.
The schools are meant to motivate young children but not force them to join forces. In our batch 1994-2001 from sainik school korukonda, all the brightest students joined forces. Some of them had even cleared IIT exam from school itself.I can give the exact details to those interested. They are continuing to do well in the forces. It shows the motivation we had. By depriving the liberty of free scholarship we will cease to attract bright students. We should rather concentrate on inculcating the sense of pride, which i am sure the sainik schools are successful.
We should also be brave to accept the fact that the officers are underpaid. Their efforts and duties need to be paid better. I say this though i am not in the forces.
I feel that a senior officer like Sudheer Parakala should think in more realistic terms.

SAINIK SCHOOLS -MEANS TO A GOOD CAREER ?
by krishnan bala on May 13, 2008 10:33 AM

Mr.M.P.Anil Kumar, has done yeomen service by bringing in to light the deficiencies in the Sainik Schools organisation which feeds the the military establishments. One view point that has not been taken in to account in the shortage of eligible personnel for the armed forces, is the existence of medieval and anarchronistic structure that the Indian military establishment suffers from and its refusal to re-orient itself to the changing modern times where the aspirants are no more impressed by the clanish and religious compulsions to sacrifice their lives in the discharge of their duties. The constituency from which the officers and other ranks hail,is now aware of the opportunities for a educated person with atleast average capabilities across the corporate world in a democratic state and is not willing to sacrifice his entire life in the performance of hazardous duties in un-congenial environment, deprived of the fundamental rights a citizen enjoys in a free country when his self esteem is compromised. The present officer cadre despite feeling revulsion when they are treated inhumanly by their superiors, fail to learn a lesson when they come to occupy the seats of command and control and repeat the same mistakes that their seniors committed. Thus the colonial system continues and each officer is frustrated and looking for the day when he will be able to get out and feel the freshness of air outside.Corruption, personal vendetta, victimisation, favourtism and nepotism are so widely

Adding to above views: Post 1990's we could even find state governments like Maharashtra opening their own sainik schools (those days), I am till date unable to understand, the purpose of opening another such school(s) when we already had one.Funds from state government were almost nil, which took schools in a poor state.

I feel there needs to be direct involvement of center (defense ministry)eliminating the roll of state,to again bring up the standards which sainik schools are known for.

Rs 44 crore at the rate of
Rs 2 crore each to the 22 Sainik Schools for
immediate improvement is a temporary solution.
but rightly said ""Come on, cough up 44 crores"
at least will help control the situation getting bad to worst.

i feel sainik schools can also act as breeding grounds for tomorrows athletes.. sme time back i read an article were the PT of some sainik school was responsible for churning out marathon champions.. i am sure this is not an isolated incident.. sainik schools have generally had a very good physical training program. this must be extended and funds should come from the sports ministry too. That way infrastructure can be put in place faster and two problems facing the nation can be solved

Sainik Schools
by Suresh Bhave on May 12, 2008 09:18 PM  | Hide replies

I was one of the first batch of students entering Sainik School Satara. I benefited from a very high standard of education and every facility to develop talent. I learnt horse riding, swimming, drawing and painting, photography, claay modelling, aero-modellin and got elementary weapon training. There were excellent Physical Training instructors from the Army. Academics were of a very high standard and a well stocked library inculcated a love for reading. Our prinicpal, Colonel Puri is a gem of a person and we, old boys make it a point to see him and touch his feet whenever in Pune. Mrs. Puri remembers all of us by name even after almost five decades. The bond that the school has built among the boys is so enduring that even when meeting a fellow student after several decades I do not feel the passage of time. So fresh are the memories, it is as if we had wished each other good night only yesterday. The school gave her sons a lot of things; top physical fitness, spirit, many crafts and skills, courage and, the best and the most precious, honesty. Reason why Sainik Schools are neglected today is that her product is not needed by the rulers of the day.
