Bodhi Tree
by rajendra borikar on May 08, 2008 08:02 AM

How it is considered as 250 years old when at the end you say that it is the same tree under which Budha got nirvana 2550 years ago ?????

Thnx.

tree's age?
by chakravarty devulapalli on May 07, 2008 06:14 PM  | Hide replies

If the age of the this tree is 150yrs/200yrs. Then it is possible that this tree was replaced at the exact same spot for over 100times since Buddha attained enlightenment which is possible. My guess could be farfetched, I think historians and Buddhists refer more to the spot rather than the tree itself? This rediff article is clumsy. They should have written and addressed the issue with more clarity. Careless presentation!!

It is a Banyan tree. If you anything about how a Banyan tree reproduces, it can be even older than 3000 years.
Also we in India have chopped off many of the big trees. Trees can live for thousands of years.

sorry got the math wrong there. Must have been replaced more than 10times or the tree must have been a tenth generation sapling!

Scientists!
by Neo on May 07, 2008 05:58 PM  | Hide replies

These dumb scientists cant do some worthwhile research to resolve the food crisis, and here they are pruning some old tree and feeding it with micronutrients! Atleast if these scientists could use their time in a worthwhile fashion and improve food yields, a few living humans could be saved from starvation!
This is called "misplaced priorities", and India is full of only this...

If the 3 trillion dollars that USA had spent (and still counting) on Iraq war were used to do some R & D on crop yields or food aid to poor countries, I am sure the world would've been a better place. They could've sent an assassination team to kill Saddam, which would've costed nextto nothing compared to 3 trillion.

Neo,
Why are you not doing something about food crisis? Every one and every branch of the society has to do its job. If they do not protect the tree, they will be able to solve the food crisis is a bad equation.

This is because it is not the same tree but some other tree produced from the first tree. So, it is a child of the tree under which Buddha got enlightenment.
