Foreign Affrairs is controlled by the most conservative Americans, who also control CNN-IBN, who also control India Today and Outlook. Thus, anyone connected to them would be considered as intellectuals but others would not. This is called Cultural Imperialism.

he was a pakistani but then he came to india and got indian citizenship then went to uk. So there is no problem in saying salman rushdie is from india.

what would you say of amartya sen who has spent most of his life outside country. and V S ramachandran who is practicing in US. So don't be a fool or rather be a fool at your own expense. I believe these are indians by origin and done us proud. their karmakshetra hardly matter for me. Its enough that they have been indians. Dont forget these are the people who have opened lot of gates and lot of hearts unknowingly for india due to their sheer diligence and intelligence. People look at india with respect. It hardly matters that they are not in india.

indians are those who have Indian passports at least, whether they stay in the North Pole or in Uttarachal does not matter. People of Pakistani orgin or Muslims, who are now US or UK citizens are not Indian by any means, they are not even Persons of Indian Origin ( POI) acording to the law of India. Thus Salman Rushdie or Farid Zarakia are just as much Indian as Jinnah or Liaqat Ali or Md Iqbal. Using the same logic, Chomsky, Friedman, Stiglitz, or even Hillary Clinton are Israelis.

Ashish Nandy is one of the dumbest guys one would come across. Writes opinions based on illusionary fiction, complete leftist. He does not even bother to find the facts on most topics, and is infact incapable of understand them.
Some of the others in the list are also not even near to the top.
The list is made by some americans and obviously has an americal way of thinking. They have no clue about the rest of the world. No wonder half the indians in the list are also foreign citizens because that is what america know.
These articles are good for gossip and general time pass.

Although I salute Chomsky's contribution to the field of linguistics.

There is no American Agenda in this list.
#1. It has nothing to do with official US policy AND seems not funded by government. This is a supposedly a private magazine and can do anything to fill pages (I don't see any large conspiracy or strategy in it).
#2. Why the **%$#$ Rediff picked this no-news item and made headlines of it? There are thousands of such magazines and newspapers in US and they all publish their own ranking of people, sports persons, schools, cities, and vacation destinations etc several times a year. This does not qualify as a news item.
