Goa is becoming like Thailand, Spain, etc.
by Vas on Mar 18, 2008 02:54 PM  | Hide replies

India, particularly Goa, is fast becoming like Thailand and Spain, a magnet for junk tourism. Wherever there is drugs, sex, and alcohol involved in abundance, there is bound to be homicide, rape and other crimes. More European tourists get killed in Thailand than in nay other tourist destination - just a couple of days ago, a Swedish tourist in Thailand beach was found dead. The is the unfortunate downside of developing these 'hippie' havens that tend to attract predominantly the unwanted, lower class tourists, instead of regular tourists who go to another country to experience a new culture and heritage, and see the sights, attract anti-social elements.

In fact, in Thailand, much of the murder of western tourists is commited by other western tourists, and most often involves drugs, alcohol and prostitution.

I agree that the police in Goa have no business to try and stupidly cover up the case. If they had been ''smarter,'' they would have just done what the police in the West often do: when there is a crime against non-whites - the police tend to be subtly indifferent, and pretend to work on the case while doing nothing about it. The chunk of the cases of murder of Indian students in the US have never been solved; many deaths have been declared as suicides, when they most probably weren't. Unfortunately, these Indian parents were all in India and unable to personally push the police to do their jobs properly and investigate the case.

Unfortunately, no other Indian in the US was willing to help them to follow up on the case. The result is, the case is considered closed within six months, and the file put into the trash bin. If the Goan government is not willing to clean up the beaches, and are going to allow Goa to go the way of Thailand and Spain, well at least take tips from the police in many western countries, and learn how to look efficient while sleeping on the job.

Criminal Mother
by Lalatendu Deo on Mar 18, 2008 09:17 AM

It is pity that the Goa Government is hell bent upon diverting attention of people from the murder of the teen.

Instead of trying to console the mother of the great loss and trying to go to the bottom of the crime committed, the Goa Government is harassing the lady. Has the lady's background got anything to do with the Crime committed on the Goa Beach? Did she commit any crime in Goa, or any where else, which has not yet been brought to notice? If yes, let us bring that into fore. But, that is a separate thing altogether, that has nothing to do with the murder.

Even the Media is getting pleasure out of displaying agility in highlighting the mother's background, that in a way has brought down the seriousness of the Crime committed on the beach.

I do not know, but information that we come across in various such articles, does in fact, do exactly the opposite of what is expected of the Media. And in the process, it helps the persons who have committed the crime, to some extent.

Am I right?

Don't let Fiona re-enter India: Goa to Centre
by Nirpinder Singh on Mar 18, 2008 06:58 AM

The Police and Administration in Goa seem hell bent on making us a laughing stock in the World. Instead of admitting their mistakes they would rather do anything but. On a town meeting with Barkha Dutt shown on TV the Home Minister of Goa responded belligerently to a Foreign Tourist who said that she had seen Policemen taking money on the Beach. The Minister countered by asking if there was no corruption abroad. To answer him Policemen certainly do not accept money in public abroad. If he is looking for a way to justify the present state of affairs he should be ashamed. This Government is merely trying to hide its shameful secrets from the public. This is nothing but a sham.

Question to be ponder...
by QandA on Mar 18, 2008 06:21 AM  | Hide replies

Can't people stick to the point.. Corruption/drug underworld connection is one thing and investigating a murder is another...

A foreign National cannot and should not be allowed to challenge the Authority in PUBLIC wihtout any evidence.. Just based on suspicion and comparing Police service in UK Vs Goa is not fair to Indian authorities...

It's hard to imagine a person in India going to UK and gets killed in a racial crime and then that person's relative challenges the whole of UK police incompetence...

If the out come of the result is JUDGED BY THE MEDIA AND THE PEOPLE then I think we cannot believe ANY INVESTIGATION BY ANY AUTHORITU IN INIDA...

The best way to react is to challenge each and every MOVE BY THE POLICE using the EVIDENCE DOMAIN. What are the investigative reporters doing? Do U think REDIFF will seriously have a full time reporter DOINGB AN INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM to challenge the Police conclusion..

Typicalm Indians always Criticise Politicians and Police and they could be wrong but the Criticism is old and not correctly channeled..

Why not criticised the methods of investigation and the process of investigation based on evidence? At least that will benefit reltives of victims.... What's your opinion?

Why should a forign national not be allowed to speak exactly what he/she thinks fit? And do you think Goa Government is doing the things in the proper manner?

We as citizen, should try to go into the matter in deep before reacting. It is clear that the Goa Police in particular and the Goa Government in general are trying to divert attention of ours to the matters that is not core to the murder issue.

Let us allow the mother to speakout. We are reasonable enough to filter out things that are unwarranted before generating an opinion.

Mr Ravi Naik - Resign
by on Mar 18, 2008 12:35 AM  | Hide replies

I think if the home minister Ravi Naik has a bit of shame left, he will tender his resignation. First Police say, the victim was drowned. Then when media took the case, they resolved the case in 2 days. Have they really done any thorough investigation? Police are really bringing shame to Goa tourism which might be a bread and butter for many people. Goa has become an entry point for Drugs. Mr idiot politician, people are not fool. Its better for Goa that you resign and get good name for the country.

Dude - that's assuming Ravi Naik has a conscience. A daughter has been brutally killed, and all this pathetic sewer rat wants to do is ban the mother from entering. If it wasn't for the mother, the super cops of Goa would have buried this case a long time ago..
How India can ever become a 'superpower' with criminals like these in the government is beyond me..

The same way UK, with its numerous racially motivated crimes against non-whites and sexual harassment of Indian girls by white skin-heads, with the predominatly white police turning a blind-eye to the charges and often engaging in racism themselves, became a 'super-power.'

The same way US, with its thousands of racial and gender motivated crimes, and the indiscriminant murder of Indian students, with the american police in many parts of US abusing and beating up 'suspects' , became a 'super-power.'

How a country becomes a super-power is hardly relevant here, is it?

I stay in the UK and am currently seeing the situation here. In the UK many people live on benefits (living on tax payers money i.e.) legally without having to do work and take vacations using these. If they Indian govt and UK press report a poor standard of living for Fiona; I think it is very important to file a case against her. She cannot tarnish the image of our country when she herself is living in an impoverished state without herself moving her a*se in UK. Regarding child neglect, it is imperative the UK and the Indian govt Liase and report to Child welfare organisations. Most kids in UK are in a very bad state with practises of drug, alcohol and sex being the main pass-time. Indian rapist did a wrong thing although it was an underaged consensual sex. He must be punished undoubtedly; but Fiona just cannot be looked at the sympathy considering her negligence. 7 kids on a un supervised holiday with her partner! This is abomination!
