This is the reason why their anscestors were known as RED INDIANS ;)

Ohhhhh Myyyyy GOD !!!!. Man you never went to school. This is the reason why our parents said read books don't watch too much TV.
When Columbus went on a voyage to India, he got lost in Sea and landed in America. Thinking that he is India he started calling them Indians. Later when it was realized it is not India where he has landed there were various name that came up like Red Indians ( because the sun burnt skin of the Indians mostly in southern part of USA gives a reddish look to their skin), American Indians, Native americans etc.
The real americans are the native american tribes (just like the aboriginals in Australia). Most of the white americans are from Ireland, Britain, Scotland, eastern european etc. Then you have blacks who were brought as slaves from africa. Italian americans, Hispanics/latinos from south americas etc.. for rest of the information please borrow a history book from a 4th grader or ask a school going kid.

Indians let us mind our own business
by SAYAK BORAL on Feb 05, 2008 01:36 AM  | Hide replies

My last message was reported for abuse (I used a swear word). Point is Indians based in India should not get too excited about who comes to power in the US as your life does not depend on it. Let us stop giving these attention-craving Americans more importance than they deserve. Indians should not appear to "cringe" or bend over backwards..even if we're a poor country we should keep the self-respect intact. Bharat Mata ki Jai.

Thanks but its not a crime to be aware and interested in what's going on around the world. We dont want another stupid guy running things amuck around the world which can untimately come back and hurt us in India... We should not want another irresponsible person attacking every known civilization in the world and have that cause a terrorist attach in UP, Delhi, AP or Maharashtra... so I think its good that we pay attention to the world.

You may have your reasons to think otherwise but we are as patriotic as you are in thinking the way we do.

There's a difference between "being aware" and "going overboard". This comment is not directed towards you but those sections of the media which haven't learnt how to prioritise news properly. If I had to learn about US elections, I would visit an American website and rather not be subjected to extensive news coverage in Indian media. And I would be only interested in India-specific issues e.g. the nuclear deal. I'm not interested in learning wasteful information e.g. during the French President Sarkozy's visit to India recently, Indian media wasted so much time and space on his girlfriend-mistress that it was beyond sickening. This is what I call a "cringing" mentality which has to be overcome. I'm also in favour of freedom of expression if you feel such irrelevant issues make your day, do feel free to express yourself as an Indian citizen. I'm not questioning your patriotism.

One only needs to visit the English-version websites of our neighbouring news media China (Xinhua), Thailand (Bangkok Post) etc. to understand how they give higher priority to their own countries news -just contrast that with this cringing mentality of India's English dailies...are you saying China, Thailand, Korea are any less-globalized than India? Think again. It took us 200 years of freedom struggle to drive the Westerners (British) away from this country. It may take only 20 to go back the same route again.

Well, in some sense rediff is an Indian portal catering equally to NRI's in the US. Infact it is only listed in US stock market. I don't know the exact reason for the US only listing, but it is telling of the NRI-centric nature. And NRI's in the US would definitely be interested in knowing their communities point of view of the election, even though not all of them can vote. And besides, there is no dearth of Indian newspapers online to read about MNS and SP clashes.

Hillary for Prez
by NextPrez on Feb 05, 2008 01:04 AM  | Hide replies

90% of the Indian American community is wholeheartedly supporting Hillary Clinton. She is right in the center, little tilted towards the left which is just like the Indian-American community.

The polling numbers don't count the Indian-American votes. We can make a difference!

Though our young generation is fired up by the fiery speeches of Barrack Obama, Hillary Clinton is still the choice of most of our senior citizens.

It does not matter whom you vote for but please go out tomorrow and vote!

90% of the Indian American community is only interested in the short term gains like outsourcing and most remember the economic growth seen during Mr. Clinton's presidency and expect the same from Hillary Clinton. I dont think that is possible because we as a nation of Indians are taking on most of that growth and I would be surprised if you will see that sort of dominance being given back to the Americans, whether its under Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

What needs to be understood is that Hillary Clinton is as old school as it gets when it comes to abusing American power and dominance around the world. Barack Obama seems to be the more thoughtful, respectful and considerate person, the kind that can actually help the world and not just the short term gains for Indain Americans.

FYI. Rediff.com is an India Abroad website not only for India. Please get your facts clear.

Barack Obama has only his fiery message and no solutions and his only point of argument is that Hillary voted for the war!!

Why don't you post your Hillary Clinton-propaganda in a US political website, my dear ABCD "NextPrez"? I'm sure they are much more in number compared to a handful such as Sify, rediff etc. which should be focusing on India-specific issues only.

Obama stands for younger Generation!!
by lalit gupta on Feb 05, 2008 12:32 AM  | Hide replies

I think listening to various debates, Obama has ideas different then older generations, he actually resembles change. I can compare him to Rajeev Gandhi.

Mostly, he is percieved as a much required change in US and international affairs.

Thanks,
Lalit

RAJEEV GANDHI WAS son of a terrorist ( INDRA GHAZI KHAN who destroyed punjab by empowering bhindranwale)

Moreover he gulped down 100 crore hard earned money of indians, and left our soldiers to die cold bloodedly at the hands of pakistanis while using BOFOR guns.

SHAME ON YOUR POOR KNOWLEDGE LALIT GUPTA
