India is Hinduism

India's being Incredible and Unstoppable is simply due to its inherent Hinduness. The ravaging of Islam on society where people can be beaten to death simply for 'blasphemy' is just next door in Pak and Bangladesh. Ms De should praise Hinduism at length.

And that is mostly because of oil exports from their country...show me one country where there is no oil export and still have GDP much higher than India...don't just write GDP and crap without realizing actual facts...

Cherish and protect our best, correct our mistakes, and learn every day
by VH on Apr 28, 2008 06:17 PM  | Hide replies

I can agree with Shobha De only partially. I was an NRI for 12 years. I lived all of them in US & returned to India 2 years beack. Yes, I accept in the past 2 years I sniffed at the India's problem innumerable times. Even today while I drive my car my anger comes out with some stronger expletives! Still my wife tells me I'm the most optimistic about India.

Ever since I landed in US in 1994 I wanted to come back. Dream was for 4 years and it took 12 years to come back. Ofcourse I dreamt on going to US during my college days & while working in India. What made me to come back? Not just patriotism, parents, family, children culture but deep in my heart all of them but above all I belong here. People may say just because India is growing he has come back and all those patriotism & so on is just a white lie. Let them. I dont care.

So can I agree with Mrs. De & stop whining? I dont think so. Because no that I'm stubborn but feel that we are not perfect like anybody else in the world. Self realization is a great concept coined by Indian Saints. That is observe yourself, realize your short comings & correct yourself. Short comings could be both personal as well as social. Personal one could be our internal drawback like anger etc. Social could be with the family, realatives, freinds, or society as whole.

My wife questioned me (although she was also a party to the decision of coming back to India) few times that did we do a mistake ...(to be continued)

by bring back our children to India & put htem in trouble in such un-civic society.

I told her 'NO'. I told her India has a great family value, spiritual content. I gave our own parents & grand parents example. That how much spirituality injected in us by them. That is the best we have.

But the moment we leave the house we have zero civic sense. Today in India co-drivers dont care for others life & no courtecy at all while they are driving, when they have to follow queue, for society etc. The moment we leave our house we become most un-civilized society. Thats the 'bad' we have. We need to correct ourselves. We have to learn from others. Good place to know such thing is from the people who are advanced in that. We dont need cheer girls from USA. But we need good civic behavior from USA. Attitude of every thing is alright with us & we have nothing to learn from others is what eating us and our society. So observe our own drawback & learn from it & be humble always.

I cherish those years I was in US. I went to a University to do my MBA with IIM quality. If I were in India IIM would be only a distant dream because factor of luck is very important along with intelligence & effort. Where as in US effort & some intelligence is all that matter to get an MBA with such a great university. The sincere uncorrupt system in that country is a good thing to learn and implement here. I am optimistic that India will one day achieve that. I also know that we have to work towrds that.

The Dilema of Developed India
by tony jos on Apr 28, 2008 06:15 PM

Its a really touching article. This carries a lot of significance for people like me who were born during the years of trasition of India. I was still a kid when the Asiad happened and TV was introduced. Doordarshan being the one and only channel we ever knew. Then came the Reliance World Cup....those days things were simple and uncomplicated....scooter and phoneline were luxuary...and car was a dream. People to people bonding was very strong and was the only means of unwinding.

From then to today, India has changed a lot and today it is difficult to believe that we used to lead a very diff. life a couple of decades back....its been good in many respects, and India is a world power today...

But we have also lost somewhere... the innocence of the past is missing...our culture and values have gone beyond what we thought was possible...the new generation is vastly different from the past...our GenNExt are aping the West blindly and in the process loosing what essentialy were our strengths..

As with all good things that is also a reality of the present times....Shobhaa De has really captured that dilema of development very well here.....!!!!!

So very true about NIRS wanting to/unable to return
by Jonas DSouza on Apr 28, 2008 05:28 PM

The children born to NIRs adopted the lifestyle of the country they were born in while the parents lost touch with their native land.

This so very true and happening.

India--Today an absurd truth
by IndiaWiNS ALL on Apr 28, 2008 04:25 PM

I can only express my view points in my own way:

We Indians belong to different generations.A generation that was bereft of everything to a generation that believes everything is possible.

Life I believe is just that.As per articles that write about Security management, attitude of people changes:it changes with generations of people.

I have not lived in the era of selfless hardwork, I am living in a period where parents have forgotten how hard their parents fought to strive to give the little joyous things to them.Instead, the parents today give off luxury items to their kids, which the kids have actually no mercy on.

Their is a distinct change in our attitude.I dont know whether good or bad,but it does not seem to have a positive influence on kids from where I see.

But as I see from here I feel INDIA does live in an age of utter confusion. It does not know whether to stand with its age old beliefs that were stringent and actually by "AGE OLD" I mean 19th century(which Indians believe are actual cultural values), or whether to join the global community and be GLOBAL CITIZENS.

This phase comes in the destiny of all nations that have grown with the growth of money. But in todays India,I HARDLY SEE THE GROWTH OF INTELLECT.I see everyone mesmerized by facts such as India as super growing nation, where as the fact is just the contrary.

Jai Hind

typical writer's attitude
by sharanabasappa ramanal on Apr 28, 2008 04:12 PM

Dramatizing the whole issue has lost the reality of the theme. I don't think we indians are rubber bands, adjusting to the circumstances we encounter. We have been logically adaptive to the circumstances we are thrown at. And look who is writing the whole story !!!!! taking readers for the ride.
