A person should be judged on his merits, not the number of votes he gets from the masses who know bugger all about the arts of governing. A person should be given the highest office in the land by a number of people who know the chosen man's abilities, strengths and weaknesses, not some goof whom the masses know practically nothing about. An elected politician is no gurantee of his ability to lead the country in a way that suits the conditions and circumstances of the country in question. The important thing is to choose the right person to lead the country, not the means by which that person is chosen. Democracy might work for India. Autocracy is working for China nicely. We have no intention to change our time-tested system that has been a major contributor to our economic success. We believe that the sacrifices of the few is for the good of the majority. That's the way things should be done. That's why what can be done in one year in China usually takes 10 years in India. The race is on and time is the essence.

At the end of the day, what matters most to ONE is in ONE'S HEAD. If China's way of life appeals to you, great, so be it. Indians cherish democracy over creature comforts. They are willing to work through consensus, albeit at a slower and nerve wracking pace. There are comfortable in working with each other, no matter what. PROGRESS IS NOT IN STONES, PROGRESS IS IN HUMAN HEAD. Democratic ideal is a progressive way of thinking.

yes, but my other needs have been fulfilled .. had they not been fulfilled, I wouldn't have cared about writing .... so democracy is good for those who have their basic needs met ... if most of india is poor and people do not have food for their family or a home whose roof leaks when it rains, do not care about writing in public forum. do they?
it's all relative ... democracy is certainly not at the top of your shopping list.

well, that's not the point here. democracy may be a better option for some but not for all .. like US wanted to put democracy in Iraq and has failed thus far.
freedom of expression of thought comes with the responsibility of accepting others' right to express his/her thoughts too ... that responsibilty does not come by imposing democracy ... a society has to be ready for democracy
Today, India got a taste of life..chinese style withing the heart of its own country. I see no point in having a torch relay when the people of the country are not even allowed to witness it. There was even greater security then what it is generally on Republic Day. Only a few school children and Chinese delegates( carrying anti-BBC anti-CNN anti-Sarkozy anti-Dalai Lama banners were allowed to witness the torch relay. It is ridiculous that the chinese were given permission while the Indians were shooed away from Janpath and around. I dont understand WHY the Indian government is so pro China and is going to such extents to please them

The Olympics have become a just a big commercial circus. And on top of that, these Olympics are being hosted by our arch-enemy, China. Why should India be falling all over themselves, trying to protect the Olympics torch, spending so much money on the security arrangements? India should have curtly told the Chinese, that due to the tense situation, the torch-run through India would not be possible. Imagine all the money and effort that could have been saved, if we had simply canceled. The security-men on this torch-assignment seem to have been given proper riot-protection gear, in sharp contrast to the the poor policemen in Kashmir, who are forced to face hordes of stone-throwing Islamic barbarians on a daily basis, without being provided with any decent riot-protecion gear, and with the additional foolish constraint being placed upon them, that the police may not fire upon these pieces-of-garbage throwing rocks at the police, because, our Congress government of Manmohammed Singh and Phonyia Gandhi would hate to see any 'innocent' Kashmiri rioter getting injured.

Don, You first know the facts. India is not occupying the Kashmir. It was occupied by Pakistan and to an extent by China. Kashmir king wants to be with India rather than Pakistan or as an independent state.

Please read the UN resolution carefully word by word. The first condition was that pak would vacate the occupied area first. As a portion of that occupied area is handed over to China, that possiblity is closed for ever. The red china is not going to vacate without war.
