"One woman who comes to me needs a child," she continues, "and another woman needs money. A woman is helping a woman. What's wrong?"
This is ridiculous.
This is not outsourcing. They sell services in the process of outsourcing as we know it. Here we are selling wombs, 9 months, pregnancy, feelings that go with having a child and even sacrificing health to some extent. Motherhood at 50$! This is what India has come to.
Did you watch the film Deham or read the novel Harvest? Tomorrow, someone who needs pancreas will meet someone who needs money through some Oprah Winfrey authorised philanthropist and get the services. Man helping man. Sick.
Surrogate motherhood may be a necessity for some couples. They should work to arrange it with other consenting couples. The west should not feel that they can bypass this emotional ordeal at 50$ a month.
We should have a legislation that this 'service' should not be saleable.

you said "Motherhood at 50$! This is what India has come to. "

Obviously you are too reading challenged to understand that $50 is her monthly stipend. She gets 2.5 - 3L USD 7k approx. on delivery - not a bad sum for a 9 month job

She gets $50 a month, which is for herself plus room and bored and medical attention then she gets a lump sum of $4000 to $6000 at the end.

$50 a month? Extremely kind of the "desolate couple" to be give that to the woman who has been willing to give birth to their child! I am floored by their kindness and thoughtfulness. That is the kind of money they spend for one two rounds of beer. The same for the poor woman who is putting her life at possible risk to bring them happiness? Great. With all due respect to Dr Patel, I got to say that this is pure exploitation. If thhis were to be done in Europe or the US they'd end up paying a major part of their savings as compensation for this woman. Of course India is cheap and Indians are way too innocent and outrageously polite when it comes to dealing with the fair skinned. I feel sorry for this woman. How can Dr Patel let this happen? Gosh :-(

1lac rupees for the poorest is a lot. They can feed their family for a year easily. But surely they can charge more and they should. It is also about finding a healthy women. And it is about helping another couple by blessing them with something wonderful and their big thanks is worth many millions. So i guess it is not a business where one can become a millionaire by becoming a surrogate mother.

Everything precious is costly and every precious thing become common one day. see Mobiles, TV etc. We actually have to money wise contribute to science and technology to make it affordable, rather than commenting it

The child seekers are being charged fair amount (I wont say heavy, but there's no price for a child too), but what the surrogate mother is getting is nothing!!!

I think the surrogate mother gets to keep half the amount. The doctor charges about a fifth and the rest are medical expenses.

I think it is pretty fair.

I am a US women who actually went to Dr Patel, and it is not $50 dollars, it is $50 a month for room and bored and for themselves and then it is $4000-$6000 at the end. A lot of Us couples cannot afford to get IVF or surrogacy in the states, insurance does not cover these procedures. The cost over here is $30,000 to $50,000 and that is because of all of the legal fees and lawers fees and the high cost of Medical fees and medication. Over here it cost $3000 just for the shots for fertility, over there the cost of medicine only is $500 so right there we pay 4 times as much. Maybe it costs so much for us because of our government and how greedy people are with suing doctors for malpractice and they then charge more for services to pay their insurance premiums. Don't blame the infertile women for wanting to try the only solution they have heard can help their problem. Do you think that a rich person in Us would dare fly to India to have such a thing done to them in the first place. Believe me they would not.

Of course, this is pureexploitation. The charges should have been at least $1000 per month and $10,000 at the time of delivery of the child.

for that much money, they would get a surrogate mother right in the USA ... then, why would they go to India

India has the cost advantage - not just in IT

Surrogate Motherhood
by geena benny on Nov 01, 2007 08:27 PM

It is a very humble deed. This is God's way of helping mankind. We are HIS creations. A very good job by Dr. Patel. We are talking about motherhood or you can say parenthood. Why bring racism in this. The pain of not having a child can be known only by those who goes through this pain in everyday of life. Do not pay any attention to critics. Continue your good work with good intentions.

Is there a dearth of american women?
by swamy on Nov 01, 2007 08:10 PM  | Hide replies

No , they are just too expensive, so how exactly is it different from Outsourcing? I think this is even worse than outsourcing and I dont think Dr patel is doing a "nole" job by having "American" couple's have cheaper children.

A cynic

The nobility is that poor Indian women can have a living ... making money lending the womb not just the front end ... everyone is happy - the doctor, the hospital, the couple, the surrogate mother

you are the one who is unhappy .... LOL

Fantastic deed. Loved the 'woman helping woman' statement. I am also so proud of all the positive comments for this article by readers. Normally comments for many articles are by cynics, but this time even the cynics are supportive. As a woman, I would like to thank all you good people, and God bless Dr. Patel and her endeavours
