Nuclear deal...
by Krishna sinha on Feb 01, 2007 08:23 PM

I do not know why people are not asking questions as to who would be the ultimate beneficiary of the deal. If the deal goes thru, and orders placed say on GE for constructing reactors in India, no doubt GE gets good business and its factories will start working which have been idling since three mile incident. But India benefits only if the ultimate cost of the power is less than Rs 4/ per unitto the consumer, as was the case with Tarapur plants. This cost should include cost of i) site selection and preparation,ii) cost of reactors and the payment schedule for it over say 30 years, iii) cost of fuel supplied each year, iv) penalty for not supplying the fuel in time what ever be the reason, v) cost of packing and taking back the spent fuel to the suppliers country, vi)adequate credit for the plutonium in the spent fuel, vii) cost of de-commissioning the reactors say after 30 years, and finally the insurance premium for any accident/ reactors not being able to work for what ever be the reason.
Unless all these aspects are made clear, there is every chance that the whole issue can become another enron.

Disconcerting - by Srikanth Subramanyam, USA
by Srikanth Subramanyam on Jan 31, 2007 07:55 AM

This is my understanding. Consider paying $45 billion "importing" oil wells (N-reactors) from Saudi Arabia (USA). Next, we keep paying Saudi Arabia (US) for crude oil imports (N-fuel) for running those oil wells (N-reactors) avoiding a (N-reactor) meltdown. Further, we sign an agreement to buy crude oil (Uranium) in perpetuity with no guaranteed supply from Saudi Arabia (USA). And we lobby the OPEC (45 member NSG), informally assuring them never to test N-Weapons. Finally, the King of Saudi Arabia (US President) can stop fuel supplies for waking up on the wrong side of the bed. This makes no sense at all. Shri. Manmohan Sigh is a brilliant gentleman. I hope he is taking care of our interests.

Nuclear Deal a sell out
by deepak deshpande on Jan 30, 2007 06:13 PM

The nuclear deal is a clear sell out of national interests. Why give up right of future N tests ? we are way behind China and acquire n detereh China. Have we forgotten 1962?import of uranium for n energy is sheer stupidity. We have abundunt coal reserves. We can set up many thermal power stations to meet our needs. it is stupid to import Uranium if we cannot use it for making n bombs. All our N scintists have opposed this deal. Deepak Deshpande

Dr. D. Mistry's Answers on INdo -US Nuclear Agreement
by D goel on Jan 30, 2007 03:30 PM

Panchkula. Jan,30, Tuesday, 2007.
Dr Dinshaw has lucidly stated the facts so far settled and agreements and conditions still to be fulfilled before Indian Power scenario gains
some respite for scarcities of Energy after Nuclear Fuel and reactors are commissioned .Indeed it would need several Nuclear abdications of us, and several years of costly imports and extended time -frame before supposed energy finally may be available. it could be almost 2016.
For this we have to abjure our freedom to test Nuclear Weapons ,even if our national Interest cll for them.In hard realistic sense we are not treated on par with Nuclear Weapon wielders'exclusive Club in terms of Notorious NPT, that we refuse to sign for obvious disparities inherent in its design between Nuclear weapon states and the rest. I for one must rue the fact that our Nuclear Scientists despite their unhappiness over constraints imposed on the yield of civilian Nuclear Energy generating Reactors have not been able to design and execute either Thorium Technology nor quickly explore alternative sources for Rare-earths besides Uranium mined at Jadugoda mines since sixties of last Century in Jharkhand Plateau. We should learn to be Self -Reliant.D. Goel

MTCR and Neuclear non Proliferation.
by manish bagdi on Jan 30, 2007 03:16 PM

I am really serious aboput these issues and relly these two terms in the today's world stands some where. States on eastern and western sid of india has already passed or crossed the limit way back and there is still no controll over transfer( Smuggling) of Missile and Nuclear technology through out the world. When these terms has no meaning why any state will follow. On one hande with the grace of Uncle Sam every thing is O.K. for a particular state and on other hand if we llok to someone for just a peaceful help there are hundreds of questions and restrictions. These terms MTCR and Nuclear proliferation should not ahve any biasness, if there was no biasness then there would have not been so severe situation throughout the world, Please look the tech. tranfer to pak from China nad North Korea in terms of Missile and Nuclear Weapons.

There should be collective and unbiased action on crossing the legitimate guidelines under these policies.

Spent fuel
by rohit malhotra on Jan 30, 2007 03:15 PM

India will do the entire proces of processing uranium to plutonium and this plutonium will be taken back by NSG.
So will the NSG utilize the plutonium for increasing their warheads at cost of india using its reactors to do that.
The NSG are getting weapon grade plutoniuum lated from india free of cost after having expensively sold india the uranium.
Does anybody have any idea of what NSG do with this plotonium that it will take back.
