true. very true. our "democrats" can behave a lot worse than what Musharraf does no his worst day in controlling press and persecuting people. Indira Gandhi used to control , Rajiv tried to do it , Narsimha Rao did not care, Vajpayee was viciously bad and Manohan does not care about controlling press either ( most of English media being pro-congress helps as well - congress being the equivalent of a liberal democratic party which intellectuals are most comfortable in )

Are you telling that Media should be away from Govt clutches?

Then why is ruling party running Media houses? What about DMK that is running a group of Television Channels?

What about CPM running TV channels in Kerala?

What about Doordarshan, being run by Ruling Party of Delhi?

How about freeing all of them from Govt Control?

Try answering me first..

Media should be abolished.

When all the electronic and print media are antinationals and has been sold out to various political parties and ISI, it is better to ABOLISH THEM ALL TOTAL.

These scoundrels have done more harm to our society than the corrupt politicians.

AGREE - so that with their strict government control - no unsecular person is allowed to come on TV and talk against the constitution. Government control is absolutely neccessary.

Hail Sonia ! Hail Dasmunshi !

We want to give our freedom to you as we are your slaves.

Height of nonsense!
The most affected party by stings is BJP.
The party that is asking for regulations on stings is BJP.
Sonia & Das Munshi have not asked for any regulation or ban any time.
Third rate idiots see Sonia responsible for everything. Get your brain checked.

law against sting operations
by on Dec 16, 2007 07:06 PM  | Hide replies

Self regulation is a myth.Freedom and privacy of an individual should comv before freedom of press. Invading one's privacy can not be claimed as a right of journalists. There can be separate regulatory boards to avoid direct government control.Regulatory law is a must

some of these guys just register themselves for the purpose of positing and give all sorts of strange names - especially those who indulge in bashing other people's religion or spread hate because they would not like to be known to their friends that they have a saffron or a green chaddhi

Only thieves are bothered about so called privacy issues. No one conducts sting operations against good people as they have no news value.

Hi Anurag
you are mistaken. See India TV the most horrible channel and every now and then you will find them exposing some citizen by quoting them selectively and say that it is a general issue. Sting operations started by CNN IBN used to be great at start but after that they fizzled out. Later India TV did this on public places and twisted statements. I go sick of that channel and hope there is some sort of regulation. Now I havent watched that channel for ages now

India TV is not taken seriously - caters to lowest common denominator and has no impact. It will e given a warning one of these days. CNN-IBN is surprisingly not doing sting operations.

exploitation of the journalist cause of fake strings.
by saji thomas on Dec 16, 2007 06:42 PM

Dear all,
There is no criteria for selection of a candidate in a media house like in the case of a government job. It is a free for all business that the media house choose those good for liasoning to promote their business. The very term Journalist has diluted to to terms like Stringers, retainers, writers to deprive the poor jounalist from monitory benefits and job security.
When a journlist is paid on the basis of a story, he will be forced to go for fake sting and stories to get his stomach filled.
The governent is so hesitant to enforce even laid down laws for the benefit of the journalist. Let the government first ask the media hosues how many of their journalist are getting the wage boards the truth will come out.

Laws have to be enforced
by vij on Dec 16, 2007 06:31 PM

No law is useful unless it is enforced efectively. Corruption is so rampant in our country that no one is afraid of accepting bribes openly. Perpetrators of riots, murders etc roam around freely as they know that our laws will never be able to catch up with them.

If a sting operation is required to bring to light such corrupt and unlawful activities, then so be it. The police or courts would have not acted anyway. Atleast the media, even though for TRP ratings, is doing some good to the society.
Just because one or two stings operations were manipulated, it does not make any sense to control them using some law.

Staged TV 'exposes': Time for regulations?
by ak on Dec 16, 2007 05:54 PM

What Tehelka "Sting operation" has done, clearly attracts Section 153A of the IPC and if Congress has not sponsored this "Sting operation" then it should not hesitate to prosecute Tehelka u/s 153A IPC. As Tehelka as well as the T.V. Channels who aired those tapes are headquartered at Delhi, it is the Delhi Police and consequently the Government of India to take the legal action against them u/s 153A IPC. Nobody could have had any grouse if "Tehelka" and the T.V. Channels had passed on those tapes to the Supreme Court, for suitable action, or even telecasted the so-called confessions of VHP activists or the BJP MLA for the information of the people. And, if indeed, those confessions are genuine and have any evidentiary value in them, then the law must take its course against those whose guilt is established. The real MISCHIEF that attracts Section 153A IPC is the JUXTAPOSITION AND INTERSPERSION of rising flames and bellowing smoke with the earlier recorded bytes of the Gujarat riots, accompanied with crashing cymbals, beats of drums, screaming voices, and the highly provocative comments of the 'anchors' of the channels that aired those tapes. There is a clear intention to inflame communal passions through what all was telecast in the name of "Gujarat ka Sach", and it would be dangerous for the future of the country if such a nefarious act goes unpunished .
