A proud moment for Maharashtrians. Though not a Maharashtrian myself, it is nice to know that a Maharashtrian has become India's new man in China. Hope he rises to much greater heights. Let us hope as Indians he can make a difference. A proud moment for Maharashtrians and Indians in general.

ok - let me get this straight...
I'll overlook the Maharashtrian tag for now..but will get back to this point..
You say this is a great day for Indians - that an Indian is appointed to head the Indian Consulate in Guangzhou.... I'm sorry, do head of Indian mission posts usually go to foreigners?? Please do educate me on this...
Now the Maharashtrian thing - when will a$$h@les like you get over this narrow parochial view... obviously you wouldn't be happy if say someone from Punjab or UP or Kerela would have been made CG?? Do you think his being a Maharashtrian means ties between China and Maharashtra will now become really strong??
It's divisive forces like you Gonsalves who will bring this country to ruin... needlessly inserting your 'State' into everything.... Thanks for nothing!!
And, India's man in China usually refers to the Ambassador - not a CG - because there are more than one CG, and they report to the Embassy..

Don't see anything wrong with someone celebrating achievements of their state. Nothing anti national about that. Reaction above from A Bc seems disproportionate and unnecessary. My partner is from Kerala and I am from Haryana. Ofcourse she has much more to celebrate than I do but I don't blow my top and call her antinational each time she does celebrate achievements of a malayali state mate. So stop being the conscience of the group.

Look - I take objection to always putting the state in the middle of all this... The guy starts with it being a proud moment for Maharashtrians - why? I feel it is divisive because he's putting langauge (which basically is the reason for carving out states) as the defining characteristic of this person. What if Bambawale lived in Delhi all his life - he happens to have a Maharashtrian name, so his appointment becomes a cause of pride only for Maharashtrians...? I mean we've had riots over language, states, etc. - where else does this happen? That's why we need to play down these regional identities and learn to identify with the greater national identity.
Just appears we are 28 states ready to break-up into 28 separate countries...
My $.02 - not meant to be the conscience of the group or anything..

The chinese are never to be trusted as they did in the year 1962.The policies framed by their rulers never are friendly towards us.They only see the relations being built in the interest to promote trade.

Goldman Sachs recently predicted that China would overtake the US to become the largest economy in the world by 2020 only.
Wake up sleeping Indian after 2010 you have to go and search Jobs in China not in US.

Not true. Infosys, Tata & NIIT already have employees working in China for several years. Becoming citizens would be another story. After all, China is already almost as crowded as India in population density.

You have no idea!! Dont mean to be offensive but if you dont believe check out the daily flights from New Delhi to Shanghai. You will be surprised how many Indians are making big bucks doing business in China. I found China to be very inclusive. More so than Europe. Not as much as the US though. Definitely far more inclusive than some north Indian states that are almost bordering on fascism.

Lets not over estomate the so called economic growth and surpassing other country etc. Look at the population China and their internal problems - the earnings disparities are alredayt creating problems for the govt. and the Communist govt. is simply suppressing the upraising.. Its a tickling time bomb. China's overall GDP may overtake that of US in a couple of decades, but do yuo really think all their population of 1.2 Billion will have the same or better per capita income ?. What matters is not the size of economy, but the quality of life...

Indian Consulate at China
by Murli Ramchandran on Aug 28, 2007 10:36 AM

The USA has been very busy calling back millions of products back from China .The reason being excessive Lead content in the paint being used. Are we Indian going to take all that load and give it to our children becuse that is exactly what we will do.I am not aginst China or their policies,in fact i admire their unique ways of work and protest. But given the fact that China can easily change this situation by changing this paint,The new Consulate General should take keen interest as most of the Industries and in the erstwhile Canton province or the present day Guangzhou Province which is the designated place for the Consulate.Shri Gautam Bambawale do you have any children who play with the highly interesting Chinese toys.Kindly give this a thought.

This wil be a boon for all Indian businessmen who flock to Guangdong for business and purchase of machinery. We need more Indians there who will help out the bleagured businessmen.Teaching and training of such businessmen in Chinese language by Indians knowing the language would be beneficial.I teach mandarin to business men and would take up this opportunity with all vigour! and earnestness!

facts about trade with china
by Sriram Narayanaswamy on Aug 28, 2007 10:24 AM  | Hide replies

Did you know:
1. China will overtake USA to become our largest trading partner
2. India will have a trade deficit of $6 billion with China this year(up from $4 billion last year)
3. India will still be only China's 18th largest trading partner!
4. India predominantly exports only iron-ore to China, whereas China mostly exports finished goods to India!

All statistics were provided by a center page article in the Hindu today(28th Aug, 2007).

Unless India moves up the value chain, we will soon be swamped by chinese imports(we already are beginning to be)

India should also learn some lessons from China's growth story.

1. Spread the growth to all sections of the society - else the growth will be limited to some areas of economy and will lead to huge disparities among the people.
2. Agriculture needs focus as, most of the Indians depend on it, it adds to the overall GDP and a bad rain reason can pull down the GDP growth easily.
3. Allow small scale industries to flourish and grow - they are the largest employers in the country. They can creat millions of jobs with shortest gestation.
4. Encourage study of science and other streams in schools and colleges - We are more focused on IT alone, To become a economic super power, India should have talent and skills in every field of science - as we can get a sizeable chunk of global market by providing services.
5. Western societies are ageing. In few years, they will depend on young talent pools of India and China for services - including R&D outsourcing. To grab this opportunity, we need to gear-up now itself.
Finally, if at all we need to acheive fasyter growth, keep the commies at bay - else, they will ruin this country..

It should be bad news since pakistan is a pawn and the player is China. China want to engage India on different front except the development.
