Dr Gawandes father belonged to a very small village Ooty in Umerkhed Tahasil, Dist. Yeotmal. His father was also a surgeon and migrated to USA in early 60s. Dr. Gawande was also part of a inner team for President Clinton during his 8 long years of presidency.
It must be proud to note that the Gawande family did not forget their hometown and contributed a lot to the educational development of Umerkhed. A college named after his grandmother "Gopikabai Gawande" was started in Umerkhed in early 90s'. The family still visits India occasionally and looks after progress of the college and hleps financially to setup laboratories and Library.
We wish Dr. Gawande all the success.
