Till Ladoo on Sankranti
by Ram A Sharma on Jan 14, 2006 03:50 PM

We are from Rajasthan. We also make and distribute Till Ladoos on this day. I did not know that the same tradition is there in Karnataka and Maharashtra as well. How similar are the traditions all over the country! Though instead of building on the similarities, we fight based on disimilarities. We should strive to have two common scripts and two all India languages. One for south India and one for the rest of the country. Because all languages and scripts of the country also have so much in common. The scripts of Orissa, W. Bengal, Bihar, UP, MP, Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Hariyana, Uttaranchal, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Gujrat, Maharashtra, Goa etc. are very similar and these states can have a single script based on alphabets from Devnagari, Bengali, Gurumukhi, Gujarati. Similary Kannad and Telugu scripts are almost same. So Tamilnadu, AP, Keral, Karnatak, Pondichery etc can have another single script. This can be followed by two distinct all India languages. Unless we do so and get united and use our own languages for official and other works, all our beautiful scripts andlanguages are going to be made extinct by the onslaught of English.

MAKAR SANKRANTI
by k k vaisoha on Jan 14, 2006 02:13 AM

Our Vikrami Calender is a mix of both Lunar and solar calenders.Sankranti means the Solar calender month.

Makar Sankranti is really a FAMILY RECONCILIATION DAY when all efforts are made to make up for the mistakes of the year gone by and start the new on happier tone by giving treats and gifts to our dear ones.Children go for kite flying as it is too complicated for them to understand the goings-ons of the elders relations and problems.
The festival of HOLI is the day of reconciliation with the society at large and bring in cheer in relations and also make new friends in the process. It is thus SOCIETY RECONCILIATION DAY when we are happy to accept that at the core we are really all fools and thus celebrate it as ALL FOOLS DAY.

TIL KAY LADDOO perhaps is the best illustration that how tiny seeds of our deeds go to make a happy enjoyment and living when mixed with sweetness and oiled properly.

Its Baroda, then Ahmedabad
by On Ali on Jan 13, 2006 07:46 PM

"In Gujarat, especially in the city of Ahmedabad..."

Well, you are not aware, but the world biggest kite market is held in Baroda!

Just for the two days (14th & 15th) of kite flying, Rs. 1 crore (approx) worth of kites are sold.
