The relevance of the RTI-ACT
by Ravikant on Dec 07, 2006 10:30 AM

I am sceptical about the RTI act.
The Govt of India is a past master of making all kinds of legislation far in advance of their time. One has to only look at the various pieces of legislation enacted to drive this point home.
It has become a kind of standard response to stave of criticism of sloth that our Govt passes all kinds of laws that have little connection to the prevailing mores.
The RTI is similar. How many ordinary people are interested to know what happens to their taxes in the normal course. For that matter how many people would find the time to know and follow up on the manner in which the Bureaucrats move files. The RTI Act does seem to make sense for the media hounds and vested interests, but the ordinary citizen on the street could care less.
The ground reality is that except for those in the media the ordinary folks are none the wiser for it.
The RTI has been in existence for sometime now but it seems to have made no difference either to our politics or for delivering and enforcing justice.
People in power do not even bother to hide their dark deeds and go on with their lives as if nothing would happen; RTI or otherwise.
