A flood gate of memories crushed open! Nirmal Varma the author I came across more than half a century back, myself then in my school days. Last I met him, was a couple of years back, here in Kyoto. He appeared frail -- but that he was like, always, in his dictum! In 84, I was in Delhi, and took photographs of him, at his place at Karol Bag. It is indeed very painful to contemplate that I shall no more see him personally. But along with his fond memories, he has bestowed us with excellent work -- which shall remain with us. My most sincere regards to his brave companion, Gagan Gill ji.
May the Giver of life grant eternal bliss to the much loved and respected Indian thinker and writer. May his writings keep on inspiring many. Thanks to Rediff for the fine write up on the life and contribution of our great countryman.
Death is eminent. Mr. Verma died at 75 years is not shocking. But the fact is the one of the best known new-age Hindi novelist will be missed. I dint know him personally but I know I would miss him. The kind of stuffs he has written would not be written any more. Days of longing, Red tin roof, a rag called happiness..He was an English literature graduate, worked for TOI and many other English press. But, he chose to express himself in Hindi, new Hindi as his generation would prefer to call it.
