Clever but not impressive

Vinod Mehta trivialises his profession by casually admitting that journalists are pretenders. His lighter vein defence of blunders by journalists (like his mag's prediction on Modi's fate) betrays lack of sincerity among journalists, not their infallibility. His passing admission of taking an occasional sex cover is also an understatement. Outlook uses it often enough to overshadow its focus on seriuos issues. All the same, Vinod Mehta and Outlook are extremely desirable in this age of ad revenue-driven journalism controlled by politicians and businessmen.

Nice try, Mr. Mehta...
by Suresh Bharathan on Oct 13, 2005 10:07 AM

First Outlook invites Sonia Gandhi to be the Chief Guest. Then confesses that it has a liberal-centre-left stance. End of objectivity?

Vinod Mehta "praises" Sonia Gandhi's National Advisory Council's attempts to alleviate poverty in this country. In case, he hasn't noticed, the Congress was in power CONTINUOUSLY for the first 30 years and almost for 45 of the first 50 years after Independence!! And they are still trying to help the Aam Aadmi?! Give me a break!

The most shocking statement was his support for the Employment Guarantee Scheme! Mr. Mehta, people want access to good education, first and foremost, apart from the basic need for food, shelter and clothing. With good education will come jobs. So why is it that no politician talks about improving the standard of education in our pathetic government-run schools and colleges? It is because they do not want to. Will educated voters want to vote for the motley crowd of manipulators who masquerade as politicians?

Iam sure that you know all this, Mr. Mehta. But of course, journalists have morphed into politicians before. Pitching for a Congress Rajya Sabha seat after you retire, Mr. Mehta?! Good luck

Reader is not a Moron, Indeed!
by Boney K on Oct 12, 2005 01:03 PM

That was a great speech by a Editor of what he calls a young Brand. What he says is true - about readers and politicians. That is why we read your magazine and why we like it when you bash Narendra Modi or when you get to the Heart of Kashmir issue. If there were more publications which can make a wrong doing politician uneasy when he gets up in the morning, I think, India will move forward and will move forward in the right way.

May your departure be postponed
by Karthik Kumar on Oct 12, 2005 12:03 PM

Dear Mr Mehta:

It is devoutly wished that your tribe increases, and maybe you could help by expanding your tribe with the biped variety, rather than the canine one!

God will surely listen to it, but may I venture a request, postpone your request to God indefinitely, or at least till you have expanded your tribe in the forest of pompous windbags and unopinionate hagiographers.

Good luck and God bless you!

Best,

I think God will send me to heaven.
by Jawahar Mundlapati on Oct 12, 2005 07:47 AM

Yes Mr Vinod, you definitely deserve a place in heaven.

I must admit you are truly exemplary for bring out the
sad truth "400 million of our citizens live on less than
Rs 40 a day".

And as per my understanding 70% of them are women.

Hope we all will shun our apathy to these people
and "proactively" buy a product or service from them.
