This Narayanan character wanted reservation in Supreme Court!
by sam puzhakkal on Feb 19, 2012 10:17 PM

People, dont be so quick to forget that this same President Narayanan, when he was President advocated reservation in the Supreme Court for Justices from low caste.

Whatever you say about this person, his penchant to push for reservation on caste lines, anywhere and everywhere, was dangerous.

He was also the president who pardoned criminals who were from the lower caste. In one instance he pardoned two criminals who killed 28 people. Obviously those 2 pardoned criminals were from the low caste. Otherwise he was very reluctant to pardon criminals.

Very dangerous mindset, for a president.

But yes, he had the most eminent qualification to be a Congress nominated president...undying loyalty to Gandhi family.

Stop this nonsense of we Kearlites are happy that a keralite became president. And then what? What did the Nation gain? what did Kerala gain?

This nonsense pride about my kerlaa guy became president is nonsensical. I am a Keralite, and I would rather have a president like Kalam whichever state he is from...atleast that person inspired youngsters all over by visiting colleges and schools and talking about change and what they can achieve etc etc.

Narayanan did absolutely nothing as a President. Was immersed in protocol, and followed the instructions from the Govt bureacrats perfectly. Go to this nation on a visit, Mr President would go....as most presidents do. that is their job. Be puppets of the govt of the day. Very few like Kalam tried to light the imagination of the younger generation by stepping out of the confines of the 'protocol bound' Rashtrapati bhavan.

Ok now that you are talking as a Keralite, let me ask you what this person did for Kerala when he was a unioin minister? the answer is a big fat ZERO. HIs work was always...loyalty to Gandhi Family. Otherwise he was inefficient.

Btw, that is a trademark of most so called 'efficent Kerala ministers and Kerala bureacrats and kerala bureacrats turned politicians/statesman'.

Take Ak Anthony, PC Alexander, KR Narayanan, V K Krishna Menon...the list goes on an on an on. All got positions of power thanks to their TOTAL loyalty to Gandhi family. Scratch below the surface and they do ZERO for kerala or India.

Mr. KR Narayanan is great.
by Vimalabai vengatampally,Vaikom on Nov 14, 2005 09:04 PM

No doubt he is great.A simple man with love for humanity.Born in a poor St Family in a poor village, one can hardly imagine his hardships and challenges he faced boldly.Simple living and high thought made him the First citizen of India. His love for his kith and kin besides malayalees is worth mentioning. We are proud of him.Surely he is a worthy link in the lineage of Indian presidency of shining series.Eventhough he is alleged a leniency towards congress never said that he will sweep if his master wished.

Anoop
The great Prez
by Anoop on Nov 11, 2005 09:10 AM

A good write-up!
particulary when not many people know enough about Mr. KRN as he was not as glamourous as other politicians/diplomats.

Yes, I agree that The Prez has achieved some great heights considering his circumstances.

Dear Mr. Sreenivasan, I really liked the anecdotes, and especially some statements in the write-up.

Thanks.

KR Narayanan
by Suneet Dashputre on Nov 11, 2005 02:14 AM

I appreciate that T P Sreenevasan (given that he personally knew the late President Narayanan) wrote a fond profile. I know that President Narayanan rose to high office despite extraordinary obstacles. It is admirable that he was smart, hardworking, and humble (despite exposure to fame and power). But, it is sheer ignorance of history to compare him with Abraham Linclon. Linclon saved the American union. And had he not done that, the United States would not have become a great power. I know many Indians resent American Power- but that's a tangent.

No politician- with the possible exception of Churchill (another person Indians love to hate)- in the last 150 years even comes close to Linclon's achievements.

Just to be clear, President Narayanan rise is, both, a testament to how much an individual can accomplish; as well as to the basic egalitarinism of modern India. We should celebrate that. But, a Linclon- c'mon.
