Helpline for Men Battered by Ultra-Nishas in Bangalore !!
by Couting Ultra-Nishas on Oct 24, 2004 01:06 PM

Since last one year, there is a Helpline (91-80-56969850) in Bangalore for distressed men and their family members. It receives about 20 calls in a week from the men who are distressed due to harassment by the wife or her parents. The callers include many techies working in reputed firms and NRIs(Nonresident Indians/Indians living outside india). As soon as someone calls the helpline, his complaint is heard and he is called for a face-to-face discussion during which a lawyer and a counsellor are present.
The NGO(non-Government Organisation) called Sangyabalya and the helpline were launched by H V Arun Murthy, a freelance writer originally from Bangalore, who was living happily in Delhi until he was summoned by a court as an accused in a dowry case filed by his sister-in-law. Murthy says his brother married a girl from an orphanage. The marriage went bad very fast and has now ended in a dowry harassment complaint that put Murthy, his brother, and some other family members in jail for a short period.

Is Nisha An Icon
by rajivupadhyay on Oct 22, 2004 02:04 PM

It is a sickening decision to include Nisha story in school texts.Time was there when Dadhichi and king Mordhwaj stories were in school texts to inspire students. What inspiration can Nisha give ? Dowry is convinient to girls too. They are the final beneficiary of dowry as it enables them to live a better life .It also makes them accept no right in property of parents.Institutions like dowry survive because of greater social acceptance .Its opposition is phoney.
We must realise that it is non understanding of Indian Psyche that has tilted the male female ratio so adversely in prosperous states like Punjab.
I feel Nisha story in text books will make women more intolerant and destroy old age of both man and woman.
There is no Raja RamMOHAN Roy or Daya Nand Sarswati who can change society. So we can only preserve whatever social order is left.
There is need to repeal all one sided laws on dowry marriage etc and let us not have phoney heroines like Nisha.

Not too important.
by Shekhar on Oct 22, 2004 01:00 PM

What Nisha did was that she didnt have any other way. Her father had already paid 15 lacs before. Why was she silent then. Later when her father was not able to give another 12 lacs, she called the police. What's the big deal in it. I guess if this incidence can creat so much of hype and to the extend that it comes as an advertisement in TV, then its the time for all those gonna to be married to try this to get notices and photographed.

What she did was only for herself. If that incident is so important, then till date why is that we have not hear any similar incidence till now. That means no one has learned from it, nor the dowry cases are reduced. So what's worth in giving so much of credit. Accepted that she did a good thing..but she was ready to buy her groom for 15 lacs.

Nishas come once in blue moon
by Jigar Thakker on Oct 22, 2004 07:43 AM

Nishas do come once in ablue moon. It should definetly be part of our history.

But what about those Nishas whose complaints have fallen on def ears. I am referncing this to the our Indian Police. We also need to have a chapter on the indian police too. But which once can we have is a important issue.

I am supporting this move so that our indian girls definetly get knowledge and have some knowledge about their rights.

Thanking you.
Jigar Thakker.

Youth icon Nisha in textbook

I am very pleased to note that the noble acts of this brave lady are going to appear in the school text books. Nisha is really brave to set a good example for others to others. Parents should not pay dowries to get their daughters married off. How come somebody demands and others pay dowries. This means, the purpose of matrimonial alliance is purely commercial. What guarantee is there that the bridegroom and his parents will not making demands for more money and other material things after the girl is married off.

Nisha' journey to fame
by h.c.pandey on Oct 21, 2004 09:15 PM

While all goes well with Nisha and her famous story for her hold act against the dowry system of india, there is still something unclear with the subsequent story of Nisha and her boy-friend lover who is alleged to have stage-managed all the drama and the necessary input in this episode. This lover angle too was published in national dailies and has not been sorted as yet. Yet they have gone to the extent of printing Nisha's story in VI class text book when the case is still sub judice in the court.

So much for our poor media's maturity. hcpandey@rediffmail.com
