Reverse brain drain
by Avro on Nov 28, 2004 09:26 PM

The argument is flawed. You are comparing professional success and high-end research AFTER education is complete to education abraod.

Once someone gets quality education in the US, there's no bar in returning to India. But it's obvious that graduate education, except for IISc Bangalore is at a sorry state in India.

In short, your title is overexaggerated for effect. Like all other articles appearing in rediff these days, it's a cheap stunt.

The brain drain and Indians
by Preeti on Nov 28, 2004 08:29 PM

The article is quite realistic and shows promises for India leading in global scenario whether technology or medicine provided immediate measures are taken to encourage researchers to stay back. However its doubtful if indian government inclusive of politicians and bureaucrats show the required will-power.

On the contrary.....
by Chakravarthy on Nov 28, 2004 08:00 PM

Though people immediately take up to the general view of "indian students going to the US as a brain drain", I beg to differ. Most of the indians on the US like to be independent, and most of all, to see new places and to see the world. Though it may seem that people tend to stay outside India once they leave, its more of a choice to experience something new. I wonder whether students can ever feel the same in India(as of now)

Whatever happening today is good for India. With a triving private sector and relatively satisfactory atmosphere for work and stay, India is progressing.Forget about Government funds and grants! What is needed is an hands off policy by the Govt. in thse affairs. Govt. shall concentrate only on infrastructure development and creating conducive atmosphere for private funding and investment in Indian economy.

my justification
by Chandrasekar on Nov 28, 2004 06:14 PM

The content in the "Beginning of end of brain drain?" is really encouraging, but in reality it is not the truth probably it may be applicable in the IT field. Opportunity is not given to everyone to prove their worth howmuchever creativity and intelligence they got. When I gave a proposal for a new techlogy for pressure ulcert I am denied admission in the IIT just because I am neither Doctor or engineer, but now I left the country to explore them. I dont claim that I got that opportunity, but I have people listening them and willing to give the opportunity. Unless the Government and the educational instituions change their policy to give opportunity to every worthful person in our country,no one can prevent the escape of brain and technology to other country and later results in buying those technology for the highest cost by our own country, again they cannot used by normal middle class society.

Its a big chaos, but......?

Brain Drain
by Dr.R.Chandramohan on Nov 28, 2004 06:12 PM

I agree with you. Indeed you have touched one of the welcoming changes in the Indian Scenerio. The blooming IT retains and attracts peace loving Indian talents around the globe. But attracting talents in Basic science research is far away. The Government should take some bold decision to make the vast information tech revolution to reach every schools and colleges.Still some higher learning centres are without internet. Increasing input subsidies to education sector and improving information and library resource sharings are immediate requirements. In taiwan every house has internet thro cable. Indian Government should venture this.

End of Brain Drain
by Ravi on Nov 28, 2004 06:10 PM

It is only a small group of neo-elites with a credible bank balance who would venture to make such 'Utopic' statements. True India has a wealth of talent but the conditions sadly are still far from favourable to thrive based on merit, equality et all.

On the one side we have the so called liberal Technocrat PM pushing for Private sector Quotas and we have already starting to talk about Brain drain reversal! Nothing can be more silly! Even if we assume that there exists some basis for talent flowing back to India our unscrupulous politicians will ensure that the trend is reversed in double quick time.

Also the situation begs the question ' Does India really need a reversal'? We seem to be pretty content to having our intelligentsia make a name around the world and have our kitty party and Iftaar brethren talk about it endlessly in equally endless parties.

The truth is while some of our talent have hopped around globally and flourished there is another ever increasing bigger half who loll in poverty entagled in a Web of polarized caste orchestrated politics

Absolutely rubbish
by Pinaki on Nov 28, 2004 05:43 PM

Nice story to lighten up the mornings of people who have no idea about the reality! Its an absolute rubbish and removed far from reality. Just coz some Indian students got these awards dosen't allow us to generalize any concept. IT in India?? A big joke! With not a single fortune 500 Indian company ever present and with less than 1% of the total s/w market these words are just "noise" and nothing else. This level of satisfaction is really scary as when we are satisfied we stop improving like a river which stops flowing and leads to a stinking mess of water. Soo its high time we stop publishing such fairy-tales and think ab the long-long way to go!!

Brain Drain- Destination US
by Capt. S R Birje on Nov 28, 2004 05:22 PM

Government of India spends crores of rupees to identify "National Talents" by conducting National Talents search examinations. What happens to those those children ? What is the followup mechanism to reap benefits for the nation from those genius students? Nothing. Many of them have to even struggle with college authorities for getting their meagre scholarships. Same is true about all other talent search scholarships. Why should these students stay back and keep struggling here for an identity and daily bread ? Let us first get the curruption out of the blood of the national arteries. Then and only then no amount of incentive will make the future generation leave India for better prospects abroad.

Brain drain and response of indian secular govt
by sukumar on Nov 28, 2004 03:13 PM

It is pleasing to note that more and more indians want to come back and work in the country and for the country, but the worst part is the government the way some of the corrupt politicians keep meddling with the affairs and functioning of the institutions and universities. This is one of the reasons that none of the universities are able to grow except IISc and IITs. Even if indians return from these places, it wont help much untill these typical corrupt and tainted politicians are thrown out of this country.
