Double standards
by Prof. Anand V. Patwardhan on Jul 24, 2004 12:31 PM

Let this be done in the murderous regime of WEST BENGAL, where almost all the STRIKES and BANDHs are called by the ruling (so-called) COMMUNISTS, and then see the reaction of the so-called liberals and secularists. Recently, when the Calcutta High Court ruled AGAINST the MORCHAs, the judge was threatened and a stay order was immediately passed. Ladies & Gentlemen, think before COMMENTING.

Fined to Sena and BJP is nothing compare to the loss these organizations caused to the nation. Actually these two and like these organiztions must be banned in India. In the guise of nationalism these kind of organizations are playing with the sentiments of innocent citizens and dividing the society just to get their political benefits. The recent scenes in the Parliament staged by BJP led opposition is a proof that these organizaions are not qualifies even for taking part in democratic process of the country. These organiztions has been causing India huge losses which is not vigible to innocent Indians.Considering the role of BJP led oppostion in the Parliament, one can easily evaluate that these organiztions are equally danger that of the terroris attack in Parliament. Those attacker attacked from outside while BJP led opposition is continuously attacking the parliament from inside.Who is more danger? An enemy of democracy in the guise of nationalists or a terrorist? These organizations since early 50's ( ofcourse in different names) has been hurting the soul of Indian democracy. These organizations must be banned till they are qualified for humanity/democracy.

Surprised!
by Ramesh Kapoor on Jul 24, 2004 04:05 AM

I was surprised that my message did not get posted because it was against the High Court decision for it was akin to imposing dictatorship in the country. I may be an odd one out, but I strongly feel that the decision was undemocratic, and with the way things are going in India, it might as well that an emergency is imposed and curfew declared whereever there is a protest.

Fine Is too less
by Sparsh on Jul 24, 2004 02:04 AM

This 20 Lakh Fine is too less and that also they are going to get by looting public or government money. All such parties calling bandh should be banned and their leards shold be sent jail for disrupting public life and harming government/public property. This needs to be applied on student unions also.

Judges Need Policing Too
by sanman on Jul 24, 2004 01:31 AM

As if Congress, CPI(M), SP, JD and others don't do bandhs? Why don't we wait to see if they get fined for their activities? Otherwise, it will be seen as biased and partisan. Hopefully, the criteria for the court will be conduct, and not ideology. When I last heard, our Indian courts were not even willing to acknowledge that judges are to be appointed by the parliament. All judges are appointed by the political leadership in democracies around the world. If ours are not, then exactly whom are they accountable to? What is the accountability mechanism for the unelected judiciary branch?

Learn to bring smiles in others!

Of course, a strike may be effective democratic tool to draw attention of rulers of a country to genuine problems of large number of people when government is insensitive to them, as long as they are peaceful and don't indulge in harmful activities. But, when strikers take law into their own hands to indulge in harmful violence and crimes such as hooliganism, loots and arson etc., that create a panic, terror and other damages to life and properties grinding the normal life to a halt, well, it definitely interferes with others' liberty for peace and harmony, which is an offence that needs a suitable punishment.
This bold and landmark judgement attains much validity, paramount imporatance and much significance in the wake of increased tendency and perhaps temptation, if I may say so, to a cheap publicity and popularity disregading others' convenience and comfort, guranteed by the constitution of India! The traditional values of Indian culture too guaranteed fellowmen's happiness!
We, Indians should learn to develop refined attitudes and thoughts in this civilized era to differentialte humans from those straying leopords from forests of Sanjay Gandhi National Park of Mumbai!

sena/bjp fined for mumbai bandh
by rumy r dastoor on Jul 23, 2004 11:04 PM

After this landmark judgement we can proudly say 'SATYAMEVA JAYATE' not only on paper but also in spirit.
this will be an eye-opener that rule/law of the jungle cannot be tolerated in concrete jungle. kudos to the judgement that would set a 'precedent' and also nip the 'law of the lawless in its bud.
after all its the citizens voice prevails who are the silent majority just because a handful of politicians cannot hold the city at ransom.
instead of bandh these political parties should have looked at the incident in the larger/broader interest of the state rather than shouting from rooftops about them being 'mee mumbaikar' and/or 'feel good factor'. the voting results too have proved their worth.
hope wiser counsel prevails even now cause its better late than never.
the opposition should be complimentary to any construction decisions rather than just being on the 'opposite' side
