Stereotyping Indians
by Salil Wadnerkar on Jul 16, 2004 07:35 AM

Most of the NRIs write about same grossly anachronistic subjects. Here the subject is reincarnation of "Kali". One reason could be that they carry the impression (snapshot) of India when they emmigrated. These books are read by elite circles. What image does it portray of Indians outside? I think they are just catering to western readers who still think that India is a land of elephants, lions, snakes, etc. and would expect such subjects in a book on India. What they forget is urban indian is as sophisticated as most of our desis/westerrners out there. We are not bunch of superstitious people but intelligent ones. Somehow I think in western countries povery is associated with low intellect. They fail to realize though we might be poor, we are as much intelligent as they are.

by aalu_paneer on Jul 15, 2004 08:53 PM

"it is her karma to find a nice Indian boy for the niece"

Can someone explain this comment to me? Should it have read, "it is her duty/dharma to find.."
