US govt handles Isabel very well
by gopal on Sep 20, 2003 08:59 AM

Whatever they did in Washington DC is very wise by the govt. They have such a good response to disasters. Had it been some Indian city we would be totally disorganized.
I like US crisis handling. There will be minimum casualties. We should learn something from them, but our politicians!

FYI:Hurricane Names
by Sonali on Sep 19, 2003 11:33 PM

Hurricanes are not inevitably given female names. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) follows a naming convention for hurricanes. Since the 1970's the storms are named alphabetically, alternating between masculine and feminine names.

whiny article

Prem,
Your articles seems to have too much negativism into them, why do you have to keep castigating the US all the time. You live here too. Unoriginal dialogues, oft repeated statements like "the most powerfull people in the wrols were rendered useless"...and the first line is pretty discriminatory to women..!

Your articles are just as bad as the one you wrote during the cricket world cup!

Isabel in McLean VA
by Rajinder Soni on Sep 19, 2003 10:48 PM

Hurricane IsaBel reached this City Mclean, about 10 miles from Washinton DC at 3:30 pm at night.
It has left a big part of the city without water and power supplies.Offices and schools have been closed.
The water coming in taps is not potable because of flooding from sewage supplies.People have been advised only to drink bottled water or boil the water before drinking.
In general the daily life has been disrupted to a great extent.

When the lights go out !!
by Kumar S W on Sep 19, 2003 05:54 PM

well you remember it was our own Indira who had successfully stod upto the US might and their nuclear seventh Fleet in '71 Indo PakWar .So there must be something that it takes a ladys name to outwit the US

Well if Only Saddam had followed our own Laloo's example and given up the presidentship to his wife or Daughters before the US attack on Iraq -who knows we may have had a different setting in IRaq now!!

Well seriously speaking Hurricane Isabel is a cause of concern but I think the disaster recovery systems are much better off in USA and as a whole we should expect far less loss (but a lot of inconvenience only) than when Hurricanes hit Orissa! Am sure people will get back to work by Monday atleast

Its a different experience
by Jayanta on Sep 19, 2003 11:31 AM

Here the intensity of the wind is around 40-50 mph right now, from inside the apartment you can hear the roar of the "Isabel. Its raining at the same time, the basement level of our apartment is flooded with water. Power cut in almost all the parts of Washington and Virginia. Luckily in our locality still we have power supply.
Today we returned from office before lunch time (as most of the offices are either closed or open till lunch time as a precautionary measures) , was roaming all around the neighborhood to find the reaction of the people and found that people were rushing to the shopping complexes for emergency items like water bottles, flash light, batteries etc to fight with the hurricane. Here in the Virginia and North Carolina state of emergency has been declared.
Tomorrow too probably offices and institutions will remain closed, now its a long weekend.
Its really a different experience for me like many others here....
