Collective action is required to protect our country, from our neighbours & our govt.s stupid decisions.
by Vijai on Mar 18, 2005 04:15 AM

Yeah!! It's right. Britishers were more perfect in maintaining our borders than our present govt. When I see the India map in BBC World, I feel ashamed. But, what they are showing is indeed a right picture. We won on Pakistan. But, we still lost a part of our India, Kashmir, to Pakistan.
I am always angry and disappointed with our Govt. who take the side of 'Peace talks'. When there is nothing to talk. Neither with Pak or China. Our politicans are the worst of all. And, Congress is.. Sorry. no word for them. In 50 years of it's regime, Congress gave nothing substantial to India, but lost great part of our country & a lifetime of nusance with neighbours. Have these issues been resolved at that time, we would have to see these days.
A strong stand on it's policy, national and Intl., should be taken by India. We are growing and developing economically and technically, but we still remain backward in the concepts of national awareness. Next time, when our Govts take stupid decisions we should take a strong stand against that govt. And the present Congress govt. is again making the mistake. No wonder, by the end of it's session, there be another 'Kargil' battle to fight.

The Great India-China Game

Mr Mohan Guruswamy evidently has read too many Chinese fiction books. His article lacks strategic analysis and leans more on his personal inference from a lot of historical dates, which unfortunately is of no particular interest to history itself. Quoting dates from history does not give legitimacy or autheticity to the story in the article. It is just a personal opinion of a bureaucrat, much in the same lines as bureaucracy are made to think all along their career, to accept what is handed down to us as history by our Maai Baap, the British. To think differently and understanding the British compulsions in shaping our maps and our borders is what we need to read, not someone who is parroting their lines. I have always appreciated and read with acute interest the articles written in Rediff as they are indepth and analysed before being written. Please do not spoil that image by hosting such writers who are more dreamy eyed than the hindi movie producers !! Thank you !!

Biased article
by Venkatesh on Jun 22, 2003 05:12 AM  | Hide replies

This article only presents a one-sided and biased view. Mr Mohan forgets that there is not a SINGLE CHINESE MAP before the 20th century that shows Aksai Chin in chinese territory. There are various British Indian maps to confirm India's claim line. Also the summer patrols of the Kashmir state used to visit these areas regularly. The salt lakes in Aksai Chin like Amtogor lake were used by the local Ladakh people for long. Kashmiri tax collectors had visited this area twice in the 19th cent (obviously a sort of survey as nobody lives permanently in Aksai chin)but the Qing dynasty of China never sent it's collectors even once during this period ! Shahidullah fort(way north of India's present claim line) was actually held by the kashmir ruler for a few years and it was the British who (as part of the great game) forced him to relinquish it. This is how India's borders are 'twisted' by people like Mohan to show that it lies along the 'Karakoram range' whereas in reality it was along the Kuen lun range (making Aksai Chin Indian territory). Bad article .... author needs to consider India's view point in true light. India's case is definitely stronger as the Chinese themselves realise.

u have been very informative about indias juridiction over akash chin ....

i wonder why many educated indians still think that china is far superior to india and since we lost a war with china we have to stick to their point of view..

china as far as the world knows is a sick country ruled by communist forces and where freedom and democarcy are suppressed....

how long will china last is the only thoughtful question......
if u notice USSR is no more.....
its only a matter of time that china breaks up into independent provinces
India has to get ready to get back what is rightfully theirs so we have to make big plans for this reality.

we never had a border neighbour called china early..
we had independent Tibet ...
so to make tibet a reality should be our most important thought process..
our politicians should stop making stupid statements...

Tibets sthal-mahatva
by NJ Ramesh on Jun 20, 2003 11:02 PM  | Hide replies

As relationship with Pakistan nears normalcy, the Indian capability to grapple with Tibet issue shall rise substantially. Today the best of Indian talent, who at worst would have been disinterested, are arraigned against China. Consequently Indias deterrence potential is likely to mushroom in future.

China needs to recognize the political, historical and cultural space occupied by Tibet. If China acknowledges Tibets sthal-mahatva and perceives its beneficial impact on our region, it may take steps for restoring Tibets sovereignty. This done most of the border issues with India will also become irrelevant to China. Unlike before, China can afford to take such a step for the two Asian giants together can now guarantee Tibets security.

Hi Gautam,

The words I wrote have been chosen with care and conveys with metaphors, a firm stance. It takes into consideration the factors at work on the Tibet issue. I write as an individual citizen, hence the limitation in my writing.

Request you to read it again, especially in the backdrop of the fact that the present delegation being molly coddled by Chinese may have given up our long-term legal position on Tibet.
