Ashok Mitra: Passport to Privilege

Does Mr. Mitra know that none of the gulf nations have provision for dual citizenship. If not, then, well, he now knows it (after reading my post) or he needs to make equal efforts in researching the topic before beginning to write on it.

One can only wonder why the scribe wants us to make belief his outpour. Why is he against the American/European diaspora? Only because they have greater privileges than he. Is he envious? Maybe the mournings for Dr.K.Chawla was higher-than-avarage, but from the moral point of view he is wrong to criticize the mournings, the more, when so many Indians felt really sad.Of course nobody invests in big scale just out of homesickness.Return of investment must be calculated. The chineese diaspora helped to a great extent to reach chinas high gdp growth. That the scribes assessment of NRI's are out of proportion, one can derive clearly from his statement: NRI's will get away with murder (sick). And after all, didnt the scribe rejoice when another NRI, Dr.A.Sen bagged the nobel?

open display of narrow mindedness....
by Murali on Feb 17, 2003 04:59 PM  | Hide replies

I think the article is an open display of Indian frustration and anger against people who chose to get away from our narrow minded society and build a future elsewhere.

1. Contrry to author's claims, poor Indians working in Gulf countries for years are not affected by the laws on dual-citizenship. They haven't got citizenship in those countries in first place. They still remain Indian citizens.

2. Gulf countries refuse to co-operate with Indian/international authorities when it comes to nabbing terrorists and smugglers. Extending dual citizenship to them would be potentially dangerous to national security.

3. VS Naipaul is not anti-Indian. He hates our hypocritical society and politicians, our attitude of holding British rule responsible for everything which has gone wrong in this country. He expresses this openly, while we try to hide our failures even after 55 years of independence.

4. The response of the Indian government to the death of Kalpana Chawla was totally correct. It was good to know that government chose not to ignore one of our achievers irrespective of her current citizenship.

Why are u biting the same line again and again .What India wants is not foreign exchange but foriegn investment ,which only the big fish NRIs in US,UK can provide .Secondly , giving dual citizenship to Gulf people can seriously put India at security risk .There is no doubt about that .US,UK dont harbor a Salem,Dawood or Aness ,but Gulf countries do ,and may harbor even more serious criminals .It is not sectarian as pointed out ,but a genuine concern .

Communism as a national polity has not been sucessful (let us not go into the factors). But few things for which you (assuming you belong to the NRIs who are reaping harvests in the US) should be indebted to Marx are:

1.The Stock option that we see today in corporates is a direct result of profit sharing theory ..

2.The social security...It will be better if the health sector is socialized ..In fact most liberal Democrats subscribe to Marx without uttering his name.

3.The inheritance tax which is the backbone of the American initiative and dream.

4.The free primary education in the US..

A large section of liberal Social Democrats who shaped today's US in the 60s were ardent followers of Marxism (ask tom Hayden,ex Clinton aide) .Henceforth, before making comments try doing some research on any subject.Ignorance is a bliss but as long as you don't publish.

RE: dual citizenship to Gulf based NRI's
by Giridhar on Feb 18, 2003 11:08 AM
Mr. Krammer:

You are wrong as well as the author.

I am an NRI working in Dubai, but wouldn't agree on the statement about Dual Citizenship. Dual citizenship can only be given to those who hold a foreign citizenship. This can only be applied to foreign countries who allow 'dual citizenship' and that is why USA, UK et al are included.

None of the Gulf countries give their citizenship to foreigners (in our case, Indians), leave alone the provision to allow 'dual citizenship'. Therefore, we NRI's based in Gulf are always Indians with no chance for availing 'dual citizenship'
