tms as carnatic singer
by k p subramanian on May 03, 2006 01:40 AM

It is sad to note that people who don't know about TMS are the ones to comment on him in a rush. How do you know he is not a carnatic singer? Of course, the belated padmashri was conferred on him for his long career in film music. It has been said that TN chief minister Jayalalithaa recommended his name for the padmashri as she rightly felt the very award would have no meaning if it is not given to TMS. She has promised to recommend his name for bigger awards. Recently I heard SPB keep telling the tv viewers on vijay tv that he had received national awards for six times, revealing his deepmost desire to be in the limelight by beating his own trumpet. What he should understand is he can never ever go anywhere near TMS ability to sing in tamil films, though he has managed to sing record number of songs. He has managed the number but will never match the quality. Coming to TMS as carnatic singer, he is highly qualified and was trained by sarangabhani bhagavathar and rajamani iyengar. His renditions are in refreshing contrast to the so-called vidwans whose voice is so open that they are most of the time sound hoarse. TMS voice is a highly cultured voice

seems like only "NORTH" actors get Padma awards. i think they should get filmfare awards and not padma awards. Amir khan, naseerudin.. why.. just for a few good movies...get real!!!
what about some Xlent actors in south... man.. this is ridiculous. and the paper doesnt get the info right. TMS is a a playback singer...

It does'nt matter,I think TMS must have had some amount of training in south indian classical music to be a play back singer. we have some classic examples like Shankar Mahadevan and Hariharan who had their initial training in carnatic music. We should appreciate the government for recognizing him, at least now.
