What's wrong, if people walked out ?

I am a Tamilian, but can well understand the negative sentiments about the show. Singer Chinmayi says "it's another case of intolerance & double standards". How ridiculous !! Would she sit through a show comprising 50% Assamese songs, just because music transcends all boundaries ?

Music and Lyrics go together. So if some people walked out & expressed their disappointment on social media, it's their prerogative. Let's not make silly statements about chauvinism and North vs South India divide etc.

You dont know anything about how chauvinistic North Indians are about Hindi and their region. Many of them have chip on their shoulder and think everyone should follow their language and culture. Bollywood fuels this arrogance.

Love music, love voice of singer or art of composer
by Sandip Mishra on Jul 15, 2017 01:56 AM

Please for God sake, don\'t fight over language. India is a rich country in its cultural and language diversity which is set to be an example in the eye of the world. For this it is respected and envied. But fighting on this account inside will derogate its image aswell its people\'s image. Please don\'t. Music is universal. Maximum music lovers listen music rather its lyrics otherwise some vulgar songs also made super hit due to its music only not the lyrics. If somebody like Ilayaraja may be of south origine but adored in not only North India but also Internationally due to magic of his composition. But being an Indian we are proud of him as like Shankar Jaikishan of Hindi Film. So, when diversity made us famous internationally how can we fight over the language. Hindi was accepted as a common language because it is easy for many of states of India to speak or understand as like English Internationally. So, let us accept the reality. Why unnecessarily we fight. Let Hindi be our national language but our regional language can not lose its identity who may speak against it. It is foolishness. All regional languages of different states in India have their richness for which we studied M.I.L (Mother Indian Language) at least till our Matriculation as a subject. Why ? due to its richness. So, I request all not to quarrel on rich subject which will result only lose.

A R Rahman
by daniel thorat on Jul 15, 2017 12:19 AM  | Hide replies

Some hard facts: He does not "compose" any music, Indian, Indian classical (Hindustani) or South Indian. He only prepares "dhoon" (metre) for filmi lyrics. Oscar for ARR could well have been a fluke or accident. No foreigner can truly understand, learn or master Indian music, and hence cannot appreciate and grade it as Oscar-worthy. A close analysis of all his "music" in Hindi movies can support this view. But, he gets exposed every time he himself thinks that he can sing ! Even in singing our rashtrageet, he shows his total lack of understanding of the very basics of Indian music and singing.Of course, he is making hay while the sun shines, and that certainly is commercial wisdom.

Ha ha ha, Good one !! I have always wondered why he sings so many of his own songs, when he has a slurry voice making it virtually impossible to understand the words.

The best comment I have read about Rahman was from a "spoofy" writer. He said that you have to listen to Rahman atleast a 100 times, before you realise that it was a song. That's why his songs become a hit, because they are heard so many times just for the listener to understand what it was.
