Freedom to speak
by Aniruddha Haikerwal on Jan 12, 2017 04:56 PM

Most important issue she remembers is Babri Masjid issue. There are a lot of current issues on which she may prefer to keep a discreet silence, not since the laws proscribe but for fear of enraging people from her own community. We have heard a lot about right to speak, thanks JNU; the time is right to exercise restraint. Remembering an old issue now may be of no avail, other than working up some religious passion.

Shaban ji should remember that Americans are politically awakened . They have a robust democracy . Only two political parties . In India people still vote for caste, religion ,groups , region etc. She should go thru the speech of Outgoing US president . No where in his speech does he belittle his rivals .If she is too concerned , then she should work for it , like mother Teresa did for destitutes . Without asking for recognition . What Shabana ji wants is that she wants to abuse the system and that the system should silently take her abuse , and not react .

Meryl Streep!

While I admire her speech, it should be noted that it did not go well with Donald Trump and some of the Republicans. There is a subtle difference between the USA and the Indian Constitution! In America freedom of speech is protected by Bill of Rights, in India there is no end to speech! The problem in India goes to partition days and iis religious based. Not political. Daily we see critiques of PM Modi. Any Tom Dick or Harry or Jane can abuse him and literally call him names. But matters of religion has to be separated. If I have to be politically correct in matters of religion I expect the same!

Mr Kapoor, did you have the same political awakening when Shri Man Mohan Singh was PM of India? Day in day out BJP people mocked him, criticised him and all in public and media. Then you and other bhakts did not talk of restraint or political decency. Now that these bunch are in power and you realise people can can have issues and complaints with system and criticise leaders then you bhakts become intolerant and start policing media and trolling social media.if its hurting you people , so be it.Face it like a Man as MMS did and not crib about it.

What Meryl did was wrong
by Sanjay Kulkarni on Jan 12, 2017 03:28 PM  | Hide replies

Most of the hollywood fraternity is filled with hatred for Mr. Trump. These hollywood stars are hypocrites of first order. They despise the common people. It is theses ordinary citizens that elected Mr Trump as the President of USA. I don't understand why Shabana wants emulate Meryl. When she was being awarded, she used the platform to slam Mr Trump. How inappropriate!

What Shabana Azmi has
by piri on Jan 12, 2017 03:24 PM  | Hide replies

omitted (on purpose or otherwise) to say is that the Indian entertainment industry, unlike much of Hollywood, is dominated by big time thieves !

One of the most glaring examples of domination of thieves in the Indian movie industry (or more specifically the hyndi movie industry) is the way Amitab Bachan, who is as good as proven to be a very big time thief by the Panama papers spill out, is able to go around in North India and still get mobbed by drooling fans !

A countrys fortunes with keeping its thieves in check is only as good as the general IQ level of its commoners and the IQ level of the fans of its celebrity thieves !

And in that respect, India is and will be eternally far away from getting any luck in climbing even a few notches up the Transparency International ladder !

You seem to be a master of generalizations.

Bollywood is "dominated" by "big time thieves"!

What's more, you are insinuating that "Hollywood" stars are saints, by and large!

What have you been smoking? I must say, it's very potent.

Well, I did not say that everyone in the hyndi movie world is a thief, did I ?

And I did not either imply that everyone in Hollywood is a saint, did I ?

And if you imply that the word domination means that it includes everyone, then you are generalizing, aren't you ?

Not only are you are master of generalizations but you are also a master of spin.

BTW, can you explain how come civilized south Indians are nowadays in news for raping and molesting women, not to mention about attacking North East Indians? What's your spin on that?

We shall complete the first part and then go on, shall we ?

That the Hyndi movie world (as well as other Indian language movie worlds though perhaps to lesser extents) is dominated by thieves is true, is it not ?

That it is financed largely by the underworld and its members largely evade taxes or under pay taxes is true, is it not ?

And it is also true that Hollywood exists in a much more well regulated society where the collection of taxes is far more rigorously done, is it not ?

And big names in Hollywood frequently being splashed in the media for having been caught and hauled up by tax authorities is also a fact, is it not ?

Relatively, Hollywood is far far ahead of the Indian movie industry in abiding by laws, is it not ?

The days of unaccounted money in Bollywood are gone. It seems you are still living in the 1970s and 1980s. Bollywood is "dominated" by corporates and most of the transactions are above board.

Half of the celebrities owe their positions to Dawood Ibrahim. It is these celebrities who talk about being liberal.

Wrong comparison
by Anurag Agrawal on Jan 12, 2017 03:23 PM

Shabana madam is wrong in making comparisons.... In India too, many people are making anti-PM comments and are not boycotted.... Boycotting is happening when one is displaying anti-national, anti-social or anti-culture behavior. This wrong comparison appears to be out of her frustration on other issues.
