Dev Anand visited Mysore and told R.K.Narayan that the sky is the limit for Narayan's fee. As the film was being shot and the budget soared, Narayan wryly said that the sky was getting lower and lower, and he could poke a hole in it with his umbrella. He was not paid anything at all. Dev Anand took many liberties with the novel and the film was nothing but a caricature of the original story. Narayan wrote a scathing criticism titled "misguided guide" which was published in LIFE.

R.K.Narayan's award winning novel was not mindless or silly. The film was a total distortion of the novel.
Any number of actors may take those roles but they can NEVER reach those heights attained by the ever-green hero DEVANAND and WAHEEDHA REHMAN whether that film was flop or not that's immaterial.
Whether Guide was a flop, the movie definitely was a masterpiece what with the excellent presence of Dev Anand and Waheeda and who can forget the magic by SD Burman. May be a person can sit thro' the movie just waiting to see and listen each and every song of Guide worth his ticket and time. Full credit to Vijay Anand too. Forget JHMS or SRK, no movie or actor can generate such love and passion in any movie. SRK is a good actor, but the style and charm of Dev Anand is unmatched.
As per critics, JHMS is/might be a disaster. It is believed that even Guide was a flop when it released but later became a classic. By bringing Guide into picture now, is it being suggested that JHMS will be a classic in the coming days? Please say NOOOOOOOO
