Shivaji Ganesan given the award only in 1996. One will have to only see the remakes of his films in other languages where the actors have struggled to reprise his original roles and have resorted to change in screenplay and even characters to avoid the ignominy of comparison. And couple of these strugglers are recipients of this award before him !!
Apart from the legendary status of being the inspiration to any actor from south since 1952, He was the first and probably the only actor from India cinema to win an award for acting in an international film festival, for I do not remember any other actor winning an award in any of the international film festivals.
