Most white americans mistake Indians - even the ones with the fairest skin - as Afro Americans ! Immigrants in the US are drawn from more than a hundred countries and the whites in general cannot distinguish or care to distinguish between most of these immigrant communities.
This is a fact of life for PIOs (Persons of Indian Origin) in the US. And one of the chief reasons why many PIOs routinely make unsolicited assertions (before anyone who would care to listen) about their ancient and distinct heritage is the serious damage to their self esteem suffered due to their general inconspicuousness in America and due to being clubbed with Afro Americans !
