Dear Chandan, I would encourage you to join the planning and organization of a major event. Believe it or not, a lot of the money goes into costs and overhead - local city authorities for allowing the race to be held by holding up traffic for a few hours, police and medical services to be on standby, ambulances, vans, photographers, doctors, paying for the juice, water, post race food, race t-shirts, advertising, finisher medals to name a few. With a big race on the scale of the Mumbai marathon, those numbers do tend to get quite big. How do I know this ? I have an interest in running and have run a few marathons and have also been part of the organizing committee of a couple of them.
And there is no compulsion on anyone to run the race. People who are interested sign up for these races. A marathon is a unique challenge that tests both a person both mentally and physically. Worth running atleast one in a lifetime.. Best wishes.

Dear True Blue. I do appreciate your participation. I have never done this but have sponsored running many a time every year. I have trust in those marathons. Sorry I am one of them who has lost confidence in India's Governance system and that is why I am so negative. Are these Marathons run in Delhi, Calcutta, Jaipur, Jharkhand, Banaras.......Well I think you get my point. All those medical staff tied up for the celebrities but what about common man like me and how come always in Bombay or Gujarat?

You may have a point about these events being held in major cities. I can only guess the reason being the infrastructure, accessibility to airports and accomodation for international participants and to have higher numbers of participation. The last one might be influenced by the companies sponsoring the event. Medical staff are for all participants, not for celebrities. Out of the so called celebrities, only a few of them have actually run the full marathon. I know Milind Soman is a regular runner and participant. Another regular runner is Gul Panag. All others just come to wave and flag off the runners, and do not actually run.
As far as places go, there are marathons held in places like Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru - again all big cities which brings us back to your point. There is no reason why this can't be organized in smaller towns to increase enthusiasm for running. I don't know this doesn't happen, possibly because of some of the reasons that I indicated or possibly some others that we haven't found out. I can understand your cynicism and frustration, but hope that things can get better and you get convinced in the future. Marathon running is a healthy habit to have, wish more people take it up.
