Concur heartily. The one and only Conan Doyle's Holmes personified is Jeremy Brett. Of course one would have had to read the books to grasp the Holmes characteristics.

At any rate Jeremy Brett is miles ahead...at least if someone consider the faithfulness towards Conan Doyle's creation.
Perhaps if somebody read the stories beforehand easily can understand the difference. Jeremy Brett David Burke or Jonathan Hardwick arguably the best adaptation of Sherlock-Watson.

Jeremy Brett is the Sherlock Holmes

With due credit to all the actors (70 ) who have played this iconic character, no one has been able to get under the skin of the character better than Jeremy Brett. His diction, his mannerisms, his idiosyncrasies all bring to life Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's immortal creation. Edward Hardwicke has given able support as Dr.Watson.
But Benedict Cumberbatch has given a new interpretation to the character in the recent tele-series and made it relevant to a newer generation of viewers, who are strangers to books and libraries. His efforts are also commendable.
A further observation is that most voters seem to be biased by the recent actors to portray this character and unoblivious of earlier actors (like Basil Rathbone) who have played the character but are not part of the survey. One of the actors to have played the character is a clown in comparison to Jeremy Brett, while his Dr.Watson might have made a much better job of playing Sherlock Homes !

I remember as a child i used to eagerly await the telecast every sunday on DD. About 3-4 years back I had the opportunity to watch the whole series again along with the new Sherlock series telecast by BBC starring Benedict Cumberbatch. While not taking any credit away from Cumberbatch , I must say that Jeremy Brett grows on you and shows a man who enacted this famous fictional charachter after doing a lot of study in his mannerisms. I read in Google that towards the end Brett used to suffer from manic mood swings where he almost became the iconic charachter he played

Right all of u. My younger days memories refreshed !!
The classic Sherlock Holmes on our TV ,old London created immaculately- not the new re interpreted stylized versions.
And Leonid , even I picture Brett in my mind whenever I read Holmes.
