By and large the trade and media had expected Yash Raj Films’ Parineeti Chopra starrer DAAWAT-E-ISHQ to walk all over Sonam Kapoor’s KHOOBSURAT, especially in the overseas. There were also talks in certain trade circles that it was a bad decision to remake Rekha’s classic, which had done well only in 4-5 cities.
However, we always knew and had said repeatedly that it may just be the opposite.
In fact, the first concrete numbers from the overseas confirm the same. During the opening weekend KHOOBSURAT grossed $1.5m from the overseas with 170,000 from UK and $345,000 from the US while DAAWAT-E-ISHQ grossed $1m with 70,000 from UK and $212,000 from the US during the same period (19-21 September).
Even in India, despite the fact that the Parineeti Chopra starrer leads the Sonam Kapoor film by about 2-2.50 crore (during the opening weekend) what cannot be ignored is that DAAWAT-E-ISHQ released in 1500 screens while KHOOBSURAT just had 900 screens.
With no major release next week, we keenly await the final outcome of the interesting clash, after their second week.
