Clean Singapore Campaign

n August 1968, the government announced that a national campaign committee had been formed to run the Keep Singapore Clean campaign to be held in October. Headed by the health minister Chua Sian Chin, the committee comprised representatives from various government agencies such as the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture, Public Works Department and Jurong Town Corporation, as well as non-government organisations like employers' and employees’ associations.

During the period of the campaign, posters and banners in Singapore’s four official languages (English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil) were displayed in public places such as shops, restaurants, offices, factories, community centres, bus shelters and public notice boards. Mini posters, stick-up strips, leaflets, pamphlets and car-bumper stickers were also distributed, while postal items and cinema tickets bore stamps with the campaign slogan.
In addition to the distribution of collaterals, various public education activities were organised. These included talks and lectures by health officials, inspections and spot checks by government officials, and house visits, rallies, exhibitions and estate cleaning exercises by grassroots organisations. Competitions for the cleanest offices, shops, restaurants, markets, factories, government buildings, schools and public vehicles were also conducted. The results of these competitions were announced publicly, highlighting both the cleanest and the dirtiest. Film clips a

he campaign was part of a larger public cleansing plan which included changes in public health laws, relocation and licensing of itinerant hawkers, development of proper sewage systems, and disease control. The government believed that improved environmental conditions not only enhance the quality of life for Singaporeans and cultivate national pride, it also attracts foreign investors and tourists to Singapore.

Along with all campaign was Singapore draconian law. No country which has invented law, implemented it better than Singapore. Like Chinese military discipline their leaders have run the government....

Warning: Death for drug traffickers under Singapore Law. Once a Dutch National was caught with drugs in Singapore. It generated lot of media buzz in Netherlands, human rights, dutch foreign minister and even queen of dutch requested Singapore government to pardon him, Singapore went ahead and executed him and send a message there is no escape for bringing drugs in Singapore.
No hugging without permission, you can be charged for outraging modesty. Jail or fine.
Not flushing toilets in public can cost 500 dollars fine
No mooning pranks ie not drop down your pants. Its call insulting modesty. Fine. Nick Leeson was charged for that.
No grass. Its call drug consumption. Long jail.
Walking around naked in your home is illegal.
Any public Illegal gathering after 10 PM is illegal.
Rape involves either capital punishment or long jail sentence along with corporal punishment
No writing removable marking ink on someone else car. Its called vandalism. Cane. Ask Micheal Faye.
No sports or bar brawl. Its called Affray. One week jail.

No pocketknife in public places. Cane for locals. Deportation for foreigners. One Japanese fought his way out in court.
No expletives especially at women. Its called insulting her modesty. One architect got fine or jail.
No mention of the word 'boomb'. Whether in humor or anything. The boomb squad, goon squads will be all over you. One mother got it at the airport. Got interrogated for hours. Missed her flight of course.
No poking adverse comments at religion. You can be cited for sedition and war against country. Very serious matter. Ask one blogger. Or the Danish film producer.
No guns of any kind. Even electronic starter 'gun'. All guns are illegal in Singapore. Call them anything else or surrender it to the arms and explosive department.
No firecrackers. I think it is jail/cane/fine.
Only local cigg allowed. 2 charges. One for illegal smuggling. Sentence further upsized for evading sales tax.
No pranks such as pulling another pants down. 2 charges. One for molest, the other for using criminal force.
No utterance, 'I kill you' or waving a chopper even if you happen to be in the kitchen chopping veggies. Its called criminal intimidation. Lady jailed after losing appeal.
Don't introduce any stranger as your good friend and speak well of him. Its called abetment if he happens to be crook. Jail.
No fancy gifts like Playboy magazines. its called possession of illegal materials. Fine on per item basis. The boys can go Geylang or the 4 floors by themselves.

Clean India campaign is a good idea but has to be people oriented which means we all have to have good habits in terms of not loitering, spitting, urinating etc on the roads & our surroundings. The campaign needs to go deeper into Indian cities which are horribly dirty. I believe the old Sabarmati river in Gujarat is in bad shape compared to the new tributary which are quite adjacent to each other. Mr. Bachan better continue cleaning the roads for eternity now onwards so as to motivate all Indians to do that. Also it will be disappointing if this process becomes just a photo op for brand ambassadors like Mr. Bachan is for DETTOL.wE

Cleaning streets is not the job of common people but Government's because they take taxes from the people. The responsibility of every citizen of India is not to litter public places with dirt. In order to do this, first the Govt. has to ban paan chewing in public places. Govt. has to invest money in education (compete Govt. schools with private).

Let's all keep our places clean and that's our responsibility but sweeping public places is Govt's responsibility as they collect taxes from us.

Who Started all these ...
by Ganesh Iyer on Oct 31, 2014 02:09 PM  | Hide replies

First of all ... It is the reluctance of the municipal worker to do his job [of street-cleaning] properly ... that has led to such a filmi scenario ...

Instead of forcing the street cleaners/rag-pickers [by decree/or other methods] many people [including politicos] mis-perceived and sought publicity by doing another worker's job. Many Indians have now only proved that they are not adept in doing their identified jobs or getting work out of those who are supposed to do it ... and instead, started pretending ...

you are a bit mistaken. Celebrities doing this is for awareness. They are not expected to be better sweepers than the assigned worker. This is expected to improve our habits.
For workers, there are other constraints. There is contract mafia, lack of good garbage collection vehicle etc. These are to be taken care by policy.

Sweeping by brooms are becoming another drama by dramatic people like they do advertisement in the digital media, shown in the picture bachchanji is sweeping the road, is he really going to sweep the full road? A BIG NO. and for this sweeping see how much protection is he having?
My question is the people who really sweeps and clean the things, how their healthiness are taken care of? no one bother! In my opinion, in place of he cleans, let him provide some cleaning equipment to real cleanerers.

You r absolutely right! With so many security guards and camera men it looks like bollywood tamasha. And he is sweeping only leaves which are organic manure and not garbage at all. Instead he can provide plastic gloves, masks and suitable aprons to safaiwallas who pick up really
stinking garbage.

It is Superstar Amitabs turn to take broom to street.
All these stars, Cricketers, corporates head are all ambassadors of any Government program.Unfortunate Media give wide publicity at that time. Can the Media give the picture of these areas after two weeks.whether these people have adopted areas and will they follow on a day to day basis.Instead of this show ,these people must educate the people on a regular basis to continue where they started. Then only the purpose will be served.Modis intention is publicity and he is doing it corresctly. But how long only future will tell
