When Rajini's movie bombs, he announces his next movie as early as possible. Thats what happened with Baba-Chandramukhi and Kuselan-Enthiran too. The worst thing with Kochadaiyaan is that it bombed in all languages. Even in Tamil, it did below average collections. Rajinikanth needs lots of props for his movies to do well. Enthiran had Shankar, Aishwarya, AR Rahman, Sujatha's story, Sun TV marketing, Santhanam comedy. But take the case of Kamal Haasan. He has always been an one-man army. Be it Dasavatharam or Vishwaroopam, he never had to bring in other saleable stars to give a hit. Even the stories he picks are unconventional. Thats the real victory.

Well said !! Anybody can give a hit hiring the best in the Industry. Rajinikanth has been following this simple thumb rule for his success and claiming those hits were solely recorded due to his super star status. The Media too has overtly hyped his persona and played ball with him, hailing his supposed invincibility and thereby giving him more due than he really deserves. Most of Rajini's movies come under big banners with a high end budget and he relies on pure commercial pot boilers to set fire the box office. Whenever he has tried experimenting swerving away from commercial themes,he has drastically failed and good examples are Kuselan, Kochadaiyan etc. On the other hand, you have Kamal Haasan who as you said is always obsessed with experimenting and trying new novel themes. He relies on his own individual strength to sail through and sometimes has even embraced daring themes like Hey Ram, Viswaroopam etc., which raised a hornet's nest amidst a string of controversies. Courageous as he is, he has never shied away from telling to the World as to what he feels is right through his movies. He is also acting according to his age when compared to Rajini who is older than Kamal and yet is not shy in dancing around with Sonakshi Sinha, Anushka etc., at this age.

Sachin Nair
THE REAL BOX OFFICE CHAMPION
by Sachin Nair on Jul 14, 2014 02:54 AM

HA HA, The super FLOP star Rajinikanths box office pull is now seen clearly.
KAMAL HASSAN is always Number One in Box Office. He need not make a masala movie to make a hit. No songs, no masala, no comedy, no duets, no big music directors, no leading lady, no succesful directors...none of these is required. Just the name Kamal - that will do to pull audiences to theatres. Rajinikanth unfortunately depends on all these extras to make the PUBLIC watch his movie. KAMAL IS THE KING for the last 5 decades.

Continuous flops

Its not Rajinis mistake. The media has been hyping Rajini for quite some time now, even though 4 of his last 7 movies suffered huge losses - Baba, Kuselan, Robot-Hindi and now Kochadaiyaan in 5 languages turning out to be a turkey. Rajini is never a bankable star. Its only because of Director Shankar that Sivaji and Enthiran ran well. Otherwise, Rajinis box office pull is below Average. Whereas Kamal Haasan is the one who can pull audience to the theatres even by making off beat movies like Unnaipol Oruvan. All his movies after 2005, baring Manmadhan Ambu have performed exceptionally well - Rama Shama Bhama, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Vishwaroopam, Dasavatharam, Unnaipol Oruvan were all highly profitable ventures. Out of these Vishwaroopam and Dasavatharam crossed 100 crores easily. The one sided media conveniently ignored Kamals box office power and now its blaming Rajini for his non-performance, which is a known fact. After all, this is the same media which ignored the giant called Sivaji Ganesan and drooled at non actor MGR. Grow up media.

WELL SAID.Cant agree more with your opinion.Rajinikanth gives one hit movie in five years but Kamal Hassan has one superhit movie every year. Vishwaroopam-I collected more than 200crore if I am not wrong. No t a single Tamil movie has beaten Vishwaroopam-I's collection.

I agree with most of what you said, but excuse me, Enthira collected a whopping 250 crores worldwide and as fasr as I know, only Chennai Express and 3 idiots collected more than that.

What is the budget of Enthiran dear ? A film's success can only be measured against its budget. It is not the revenue that matters, but only the profit made.

If Rajini acts in 3 films a year, not even a single movie will become successful. He cant attract people to the theatres with his masala movies.

Man you made a mistake, both Rajinikanth and MGR are good actors. It is not Rajini's fault that Kochadaiyan failed, it was because of poor direction of the Movie.
As far as you calling MGR a non-actor is ridiculous because in those days you really got to act for there was no technology that could makeup for an actor's non-acting. MGR was a good actor and dancer as well. Sivaji and Kamal I agree are exceptional actors.

Another Kuselan for Rajini
by vijay karthik on Jul 13, 2014 10:54 PM  | Hide replies

Kochadaiyaans Tamil version is not a hit but just a below average movie which failed to recover even half of its 130 crore budget. Movies like Manjappai, Yamirukka Bayamen and Vallavanukku Pullum Ayudam were profitable, whereas Koch tanked in the box office. The movie found it tough even to cross the 50 day mark.

Good joke. It completed 50 days in 2 very small theatres, which is pathetic for any movie. Box office performance is very poor compared to Manjappai and Yamirukka Bayamen. I pity the distributors and theatre owners who invested in Koch.

film business has changed completely. Nowadays, threatrical run is not the parameter to judge a movie's boxoffice outcome. What matter is how much it collects. And in the present trend, ore than 60% of the movie's liftime business is collected in the first week itself.

True number of days is not the criteria. But the total collections of Kochadaiyaan is 83 crores in 50 days. Budget was 130 crores. Distributors and theatre owners suffered losses.
