Suchitra Sean was a talented actress, I wish she had done more Hindi films. I tend to think she was spuperb in 'Aandhi'. My condolences to the family, but the end of her era came about 20 years earlier, not necessarily with her death, as she had confined herself and had almost no interaction with outside world over 20 years now. To the wordl, she had been as good as not being there for over 20 years now. Her recent death did not cause any loss to the Bengali Cinema, as the loss had already been there for over 20 some years. My comments should not be taken otherwise, no disrespect meant here.
I had never seen a more macho and charismatic lead male role than Uttam Kumar in the entire Indian cinema, be it bollywood, south or Bengali films.
But Uttam Kumar was never given his place but was given to chillar fellas like Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra, Kapoor family, Rajendra Kumar and several others.
Ditto with Suchitra Sen; her presence was regal. In Bollywood only one person who comes close for any kind of comparison was Nargis in looks.
But Suchitra towers above all.
She even had the conviction in those days, that she even demanded an equal place and not a rung below her great compatriot even of the stature of Uttam Kumar. That was confidence.
Sadly, no one till now from Bollywood expressed any condolences.

Do they even know that she died? I doubt. 'Coz they're always busy relating their chords to Hollywood. Classic case of the Crow who rubbed n rubbed his skin with soap in the hope of becoming a swan & ultimately, gachkofied.

Uttam Kumar was an accomplished actor and a talemted one who rose from very humble beginnings. But, MACHO was one this he was not, per the Webster and Oxford dictionaries --meaning of MACHO. Not sure about your definition of MACHO. Just becasue someone has passed away, doe not mean that 'Greatness' has to be imposed upon that person.
It's certainly an end of an era. There is hardly a Bengali middle class home where her films are not watched with rapt attention. Have grown up watching parents, uncles and aunts watch her films on afternoons on Doordarshan. Those memories flood black.
