Great Rafi saab
by Subir Sinha on Dec 24, 2014 09:23 PM

Most versatile playback singer India ever had. I am sure that India will not have one like him in centuries to come.
He was at ease with any actor from Shammi Kapoor to Dilip Kumar, he sang for every music composer starting from the class of Naushad, Shanker Jaikishan, OPN, RDB to Swapan Jagmohan. Music companies are raking in pots of money even today (after 34 years of his death) by selling his songs!

Ghantasala? He had a very flat voice that only the Telugus liked. SPB and PBS, both Telugus, had a better range, and so did Mukesh and Kishore. Even Yesudas was better than Ghantasala. And nobody can beat Bhimsen Joshi.

Ghantasala's pronunciation, unlike SPB and PBS, was wrong in many places. For instance, he could not differentiate properly between "sa" and "sha", he would pronounce "Susheela" as "Suseela".

Suseela is correct, not Susheela. Get your facts first.

Sheela. A Sanskrit word for "modesty". There is no Seela. Having said that, Ghantasala was anything but flat. His rendition of "Shivashankari", could not have been performed by anybody else. To compare him with PBS or Yesudas would be ridiculous. However, other than Shivashankari, I was not a great fan of Ghantasala.

I think sheela means character. That's what it means in Malayalam anyway. susheela means good character. Good conduct etc.

Rafi, then yesudas. The rest are few notches behind. To me it's ridiculous dragging yesudas in to compare with spb or pbs. Different planets!

Both are greats in their own fields why compare ?
Btw Rafi saab was several notches above SRT.
You cannot equate one song of Rafi with one run of SRT.
One song is equal to one century of sachin
