she might not have ranked no 1.... but still comparable with the top ... one must have pressure on mind before any one ranking on top...

there had been great singers but still it is impossible to get proper substitute of natural singers like Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar

Dude.. Female singers like Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal, Kavita Krishnamoorthy and Sadhna Sargam have almost completed 25-30 years. So they started when Lata and Asha also were active. They have also got enough songs but the fact is nobody can match these sisters. Laxmikant Pyarelal have given so many songs to Anuradha, Alka & Kavita. same way Kalyanji Anandji have given songs to Alka and Sadhna.

Parshan & HVP Kumar, your statements are one side of the story. If any singer is tooarrogant and dominating (as most of them claim about Lata & Asha), will any music director consider them and pay more to bescrewedby them? They would rather choose GeetaDutt/SumanKalyanpur to pay less instead of costly andarrogant singers. One reason they were chosen is because ofpublic & actresses' demands. Some actresses like Madhubala even went one step ahead saying that it should be in the contract that Lata would sing for them. It was puresymbiosis that allowed the highly talented and hardworking Lata/Asha to prosper on par with the music directors. There is always two sides to a coin and nothing in bollywood is as straight forward as it sounds...

Also, it was competition from Day-1 and the strongest persons survived.

Well Said Shambhu. Geeta Dutt was ok but Lata was much better. During 60s' and 70s' there was no other female singer who could compete with these sisterrrs. Suman Kalyanpur was just a 3rd or 4th copyy of Lata like we had many dupliicate Rafis' during late 80s'

Agree Kamal, not insulting Geeta or Suman or even Vani Jayram (who were supposedly the "affected" singers as claimed by haters), but they could at best be copies as you rightly said. One of my friends gave me a couple of songs of Rafi sung by Sonu Nigam. Though it was good, no one could ever come close to the energy or class or melody of top-5 (Lata, Asha, Rafi, Kishore and Manna Dey). Not insulting today's singers but it was atleast 100 times more difficult to record songs earlier given the quality of sound equipment, lack of technology, recording all at once (unlike today when song is recorded separate if need be and orchestra is separate)..... But somebody's success has quite a few haters. So, they cry out....
