Movie is a mix of the good and the bad, Star Trek 2 WOK is ripped off mercilessly in the seond half with just Kirk and Spocks roles interchanged, Cumberbatchs milk faced Khan with a british accent cannot hold a candle to Ricardo Montalbans orginal portrayal. Also its surprising that the 82 movie has this beat in all aspects from acting to story to set pieces, even the TV espisode Space seed that started this story arc was more intense since all 72 of the frozen Supermen were up and running. Montalban was a great looking Khan with a fiery passion that virtually burnt up te screen. They should have used Cumberbatch as Gerry Mitchell and tackled the Khan storyline later or never since the orginal stilc rocks!

On the upside Chris Pine is excellent as Kirk and even Quinto is much better as Spock this time around. Cumberbatch does the best with the role he is given. Some of the action scenes are stunning like the opening act,Kirk and Khan zooming through space across debris to board another ship and the Enterprise in free fall. The climatic fistfight on earth is just flat as is Spocks yell of "Khaaaaaan"

Strangely, our reviewer seems to have missed the prime universe references in the movie entirely! Trust he knows that the 2009 movie kind of 'starts' a new, alternate reality (while keeping the original intact somewhere in a parallel universe) - for some reason, JJ Abrams loves parallel universes ('Lost', 'Fringe' and now 'Star Trek')!

This movie is a parallel universe version of Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan (1982) - where Benedict Cumberbatch actually turns out to be Khan Noonien Singh (immortalized by Ricardo Montalban in the TOS episode - Space Seed and later, the movie ST-II: Wrath of Khan).

In ST-II: Wrath of Khan, Spock dies in the end (to be resurrected again in ST-III: The Search for Spock). That immortal scene of Spock's death is given a whole new twist here (some homage!)

Alice Eve plays Carol Marcus. Again, our reviewer missed the reference. Carol Marcus was also present in the TOS pilot - where no man has gone before, as one of the Starfleet scientists afflicted with the syndrome that gives heightened ESP. In fact, since I saw her in the trailer, I was sure that Cumberbatch was playing the alternate universe version of Gary Mitchell - the baddie from the episode (who is a Starfleet operative).

We're also (re)introduced to Starfleet's dirty works department - Section 31 - known to viewers of TNG, DS9 and Voyager.

And does he mention a 30 second cameo by the 'prime' Spock - Leonard Nimoy - who has survived in this alternate reality as an ageing future version?

Totally agreewith u. JJ Abrams had everyone confused with the mention of Carol Marcus. I expected Cumberbatch to be revealed as Gary Mitchell. However, I disagree with your assumption that " the 2009 movie kind of 'starts' a new, alternate reality". Its not an alternate reality, its an alternate Timeline.
