if running in theatres is criteria, along with sholay, Jai santoshi maa was released which ran for 4 yrs in halls.It was a religious movie with no stars. Remember?
Keeping Dabbang in the same league as of Sholay, Mughal-e-Azam, Mother India.... disgusting! Where are Zanjeer, Lagaan, Deewar, and many more blockbusters clearly better than Dabbang ?

kuchh to sharam karo Rediff walo. You can compare movies from only one era. The movie tickets in era of Sholay was 10/- lower stall, 15/- upper stall & 20/- balcony. Mother India would have been still cheaper. In Dabangggg era, one ticket goes upto more than 350/- in Big cinemas. IF Sholay was running in this era for 7 years then it would have earned how much? Can't even imagine.
Its good entertainment movie than the other movies. but one thing we will not compare to this movie with other heros movies like Amir khans and Shahrukh Khans
Make sure to take consideration of parameters like inflation, production cost, promotions, rights, distribution, etc and I think this list will become obsolete. Popularity = yes, but we had films that ran for years as well :)
All of the movies mentioned are gems of India Cinema and surprsingly all are different from each other.........like you cannot compare, Sholay with Dabanng or Gadar with Lagaan or DDLJ.
This is the true color of Indian movie goers who has liked almost all storytelling.......if its been told in a fashion that touches their heart.......it being Dabaang or 3 idiots.....Indian movie goers just loves watching movies.....
