Most of the films today run because of promotions and hype creation and not on substance. It does not make sense to see the film by spending 500Rs person if the film is bad. If it is not good then 500Rs is wasted. So it is better to watch it on TV which works out to be cheaper and if one does not like it simply switch the channel. If the film is good and worth spending 500Rs then go to the theatre and watch it again.

well thats just ur opinion. there are many who think otherwise. u might spend 1000 on a video game CD or a five star hotel but others might prefer a 99 rupee meal and spend the rest on movies. taste differs from person to person.

Its a good move. A decent family can't go to theaters who sell 50 Rs tickets due to nuisance. If you want to go to theaters like Big Cinema, PVR, you will have to spend at least 2000 Rs. DTH is a win-win situation for both producer and viewers. You can't make pirated DVDs out of DTH. Well you can record the Video, but there is a DTH code which will be flashed in one of the frames of 3 hr long movie, which viewers don't know when it will be flahsed. However, producers know whether they flash it. If the recorded video is uploaded in YouTube or DVD is made, it will be easily tracked vie the DTH number who made this crime. Good Idea. Hope & Wish this will eliminate the piracy. All the best to Kamal

First of all viewing the movie on DTH is no cheap. It is 1000 rs per connection, whether one person see it or the family!

Secondly, only technically challenged will say it cant be recorded. Obviously not from the STB, but you can connect the HDMI cable to a recording enabled device. Editing the video and hiding the code is no difficult task. End result, better quality pirated movie!

If it does affect, it will be the producer who lose more money than the theatres. Kamal will learn his lesson the hard way.

To all Kamal critics...
by SX on Jan 03, 2013 05:26 PM

Chill guys... hes putting his own money to experiment..

Secondly, theatre owners who are screening the movie are not fools... Its their money at stake... So they know what to do....

You as an audience sit and watch the movie if you like it otherwise you being Kamal critics.. dont watch it simple.... Leave the business part for the Producer - Distributor - Theatre owners...

The box office collections of the movie will tell the story...

If a big crowd of people pooled in money and watched in BIG screen home it makes sense.

However this version should not have Advts for the price we pay.

In terms of technology:
1. Kamal said the recording option will be disabled from the set top box.
2. He also added if somebody tries to record from a cam opp the tv, the laser will pick it up and report to the nearest police station.
I still dont understand how this works?
OR if the entire police station folks comes home and sits in your house (and spoil the party)

GOOD.

Flop side:
How many group of family/friends will pool in money to contribute top line of 100Cr INR

10th being a thursday the no. of groups who can come together will also be less.

Bottom Line:
It's an experiment.

It will not be an EUREKA moment, but an attempt

"He also added if somebody tries to record from a cam opp the tv, the laser will pick it up and report to the nearest police station". If someone has really said that, he is crazy or has gone insane. To disprove this myth all we need is common sense.

Who installs these 'lasers' in every home?
Can these be installed in theaters to trace if someone is recording the movie?
Can I not cover this laser and shoot the movie?
What if I use the set top box in Karachi or Muscat? Do these set top boxes have information of 'nearest police stations' there also?
Are police stations not having any other work than curbing the piracy of a movie that is being experimented?

Kamalhassan is not a idiot like how we all think..this is the statement he gave in press conference "“It’s easier to track down the person who has made a print from DTH than any theatre, — that it can be tracked down to the home/address of the pirate because films flash a unique code generated by the set top box assigned to each home"

Moreover the movie can be subscribed only by indian people and each set-up box will have unique ID thr which address can be found..if they record and upload in youtube, etc the Unique ID will be displayed and they will be arrested..try if u can..
He is not getting MG from theatre owners and no loss for them..the piracy will exist still like how how it exists now,,neither more nor less but the producers can make money..there are 5 crore DTH subscribers in india and 75 L subscribers in TN...out of 75L subscribers in TN 15 lakh will watch for sure..from rest of india another 10 lakh will watch..15L*1000 10L*500=200 crores..80% goes to producer kamal and 20% to DTH which gives 160Cr to kamal..50-50 revenue share from theatre owners..win-win for everyone..gr8

Just imagining this situation - Somebody takes a house/hall on rent; Installs the DTH; Records the movie; Vacates the hall/house; Copies the movie into a DVD; Sends outside India; Gets pirated from there. - even if the police tracks with the unique ID, people would have gone away. no DTH company looks for "authentication" of people buying DTH. To me, this is not fool proof for privacy, but its Kamal's idea to recover money through new sources.

Are you crazy?? you think 15L people out of 75L would watch the movie on DTH ???? You must be totally lost then. How mnay do you think could afford to pay yp 1000 bucks to watch the movie? Even the most popular tamil film of all time Enthiran was watched by around 40% of the entire TN population in theatres. And this movie isn't going to be more popular or collect more than Enthiran for sure.

This is just an experiment. Middle class families still would prefer to watch it in a 30 Rs Pirated CD than opt for this so-called DTH experience. Youth and college crowd would anyways go to theatres in hordes to watch and the house-wives wound't care to know anything abou thtis movie as they get hook to mega serials all the time. At most, this DTH expreiment might fetch Kamal more popularity for his innovation than for the collections. I agree on the piracy part. None can make a pirated DVD out of the DTH show though.

Well all popular film of all time comes in at appropriate time. Enthiran came just some time back. Purely by box office collections, earlier it was Chandrmukhi all time big hit , then Vettaiyadu Vilayadu replaced it, later Sivaji The Boss which was replaced by Dasavathram so now what makes you think Vishwaroopam or anyother movie cannot replace Enthiran. It has to be unbiased. You are looking at Rs.1000, good can you also see how much a family has spend to watch a film when they go to a theatre, Its more than that. 40% of TN population watched in theatres , i beg differ, it is more orelse it would not have fetched the record collections. And I am not sure whether this is your wish that this film should not become popular or collect more than Enthiran but please keep one this in mind this same Kamal's Dasavathram where 60 cr was spent and collected more then 250 crs overall. Source: Nakeeran. Anyways critics will always be there thinking logical or otherwise if this film is released in theatres at all , critics will get their answer.

Dear shiva, firstly I am a big big fan of kamal hassan. That doesn't mean I am anti-rajni as most of the low-class cinema fanatics think. I enjoy good cinema, be it Dasavatharam or Enthiran. I still cannot see how collections wise, Vishwaroopam would cross Enthiran's figures. That movie collected a huge sum not just for Rajni, but also for Shankar and other factors (new genre, top class efforts, music etc). This movie is already on the beaten path of terrorism and we have already have umpteen movies on the topic already.

I still reiterate, Enthiran was wacthed by less than 3 crore people in TN. that is the reality. And this also includes a huge chunk of repeat audience. Sitting in comforts, you and me can talk about piracy and cost. But a lower midlle class or below poverty person can neither afford to watch it in DTH/Theatre nor would have an option to see it in a pirated CD. THis is truth.

Lastly, I dont go by tamil maganizes on collections. they are all fake and biased. Before you could even talk about figures, first tell me what eatly is that 250 crs ... Gross collections?? Nett collections ?? Distributor's share ??? Theatre revneue??? does that include overseas market? telugu market? Satellite rights, music rights ???

Very well said and it's true. It's all because of Kamal Hasan's only attitude that even if the movie gets flopped, he will get back the spent amount through DTH. To me, it looks like it may not be that successful at box office, as anticipated by every one, due to poor story line.

I donno why he made this decision to pre-release in DTH...It will be easy for the pirates to just use the DVR to record and publish in internet. Its a huge loss to the theatre owners and the distributors if they would have bought the film for a huge buck...I think kamal expects the movie will not do good in theatres and he should have sold the rights to these DTH players for good amount to make profits.... Anyways lets wait and watch how this initiative turns out...BTW 100 Crores is in stake...

I used to be totally against piracy and pirated music. I used to buy original audio music CDs. I stopped doing it for two major reasons:
a) The quality of recording was poor. In one instance, there were some cuts in the middle of a song.
b) It occurred to me that I am paying for a song that this music director lifted out of somebody else without paying a dime. This includes all the industry 'greats'.

I disagree wtih your logic. If you think the Music Director has lifted the song from somebody else, then better listen to the original. Why buy a pirated version and listen to a second version ?

Buy a pirated version ... that sounds an oxymoron to me. Now a days pirated version of movies and songs are just a click away.

It is only a personal choice if one wants to see/listen pirated version or original.
