The movie is made about mentally ill family. How we look them as outsiders, the director puts the camera right in middle of such people. People in India do not relate to mental illness much but if you look among your family and relatives many suffer from bipolar disorder etc but in India it is a taboo to think about it like that and these people who are ill are either outcast or they get angry over others if they are head of the family. Those who are thinking this movie is average is not looking from mental illness perspective but just as a romantic comedy. But for me personally this movie is 10 times better than a DDLJ or any other used up romantic love stories. Watch it in that perspective and you will understand that this is one of the greatest movies ever made but does not even look like one. That is the magic of cinema. Cheers

I totally agree.. People here are not used to emotionally subtle but beautiful movies such as SLP.. They will happily go waste their money on a Jab tak hai jaan or a DDLJ or even better.. A DABANGG!
This is just a decent and okay movie , not really worthy of an ocsar nomination. Western folks are so deviated with emotions that anything that is a family drama becomes a big hue and cry and media goes gaga over it. Just okay movie, don't waste time on it
The reasons why the movie is liked by the western press are:
1) Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro are fan favourites and it was a relief to see them in a movie that did not mess things up
2) The film makers managed to give a bit of depth to an otherwise straightforward love story by making it about "imperfect and flawed people" as oppposed to "larger than life characters"
3) It is a feel good movie
Having watched it,I can safely say that it is not a masterpiece by any means. However, you could see this with your spouse or boyfriend /girlfriend and come back happy.
Just because the western media is going gaga about this movie doesnt mean that it actually is a masterpiece. It is a decent movie, but surely not anywhere near its hype or praise.
