vikrant kumar, I wonder why u were not around there in the 40s and 50 s --so easy to sit and criticise without even knowing a thing about that genre and what value the actors brought in

"genre"??

What "genre" would that be?

Pessimistic tragedies about men without spines (or solid bones in Dave An And 's case) is a genre??

In which universe?

How can you call these runaways from the North West Frontier actors who brought "value"?

If being good looking qualified you to be "actors" than you don't know a thing about acting or Cinema for that matter!

Kudos to Sukanya Verma for having chosen the Black & White Bollywood classics to write about. Such informative articles help movie buffs to go back and watch these films and also helps new generation of movie-goers to familiarise themselves with Classics.

"Classics"?

They were nothing but unintentional comedies with "actors" born in what is now our mortal enemy's land!

CRITICISM

SEEING DEV ANAND, RAJ KAPOOR AND DILIP KUMAR BEING CRITICIZED, I FEEL AFTER 35-40 YEARS EVEN AMITABH, AAMIR, SALMAN, SHAHRUKH, HRITHIK WILLBE CRITICIZED BY THE THEN GENERATION FOR BEING OVER-THE-TOP, LOUD, ETC., ETC.

S R K will be definitely criticized for mocking people with speech impediments in the name of "acting"!

Probably on some DD channel.

But it is doubtful anybody in today's generation will be able to relate to a grown man acting his bones are made of rubber!

his mannerism were copy of the legendary actor & at times bit funny.he came out of that in Guide & showed his acting abilities under Vijay Anand, who alone could make him live the character

Dave An And never learned to act or improved his "acting" abilities!

He was the best caricature of himself!

His acceptance as an "actor" by the Indian audiences simply proves that Indians will watch anything in the name of entertainment!

Dev was narcist(a person in love with himself). He always tried to be in all frames giving little scope for others. All said & done his banner Navketan has given some memorable classics & fantastic music

women are not mere bodies
by roy jose on Feb 21, 2013 11:46 AM  | Hide replies

Hats off to Rediff. This is kind of stuff that you media people should print. Rather than mindless and pervert articles like ‘Hot song of this movie’ or ‘Sexy heroines who have crossed their 40s’ or worse still ‘Bare backs of 50 somethings’. Stop these kind of perverted topics. Do not glorify the bodies of women. Indulge in responsible journalism and see what positive impact it makes in the society. If you guys portray women in the right light, the man on the street will also realize that women are not mere bodies with a hole to satisfy their animal instincts.

Concur with you Roy, the difference being film making was more of an art form in those days rather than blatant commercial business and profiteering like it is today.

Like your every movie review, this article, too, is infested with a 'screenplay-like' treatment. Check out the way Harneet Singh writes a similar column in Indian Express! Now that's something worth emulating :)
