speaking the obvious...we heard this chant in school, "Cleanliness is godliness", but as all the other good thing we chose to ignore them as a mere theoretical construct.

As Ashim Trivedi said in Big Boss, "All the rules are made to be broken." That is the mindset of the people of this country. But all talk so big...one need to experience that to believe. They just need to get a chance to fly away and you see an ideal Indian.

This is high time to privatize Municipals in India to make India polluted free.
Also system and politician should be corrupt free.

Ibrahim, you are dead right about the fact that we Indians are not patriot, we are fundamentally divided on every conceivable basis, uniting only in the event of a war or cricket match.
The day each and every Indian puts honesty and patriotism above all values, our fate will change for the better.

babus and govt officials and you can dump anything.

There are so many factories in residential areas in many cities specially Ludhiana, Kanpur, NCR (Ghaziabad) etc. that use highly corrosive and poisonous substances that are freely disposed into sewage meant for domestic waste.

Just take a peek in Yamuna when you visit Delhi the next time. Paul saw the best of Delhi. Tell him to take a local train from Delhi to Ghaziabad and he will have a heart attack.

I am not sure what you mean by that. We seem to have resigned ourselves to a different standard of hygiene, and do not believe we were always like that. Had his comment been something negative about culture, then you have a point. But he is talking about pollution, which affects everyone, irrespective of what standard of hygiene they have.

Rabri Devi is joking about a similar comment made during the CWG games by one IOA official.

most outsiders who come to india complain about pollution, poverty and slums. they are right to do so because for us, it's normal. but in western countries such poverty, pollution and slums don't exist. in every city in india, pollution is everywhere.

Pollution in India

Even Mumbai, the financial capital of India has the biggest slum in Asia and in the world. The poor and old infrastracture, broken roads and India leading the world in open defecation etc is causing a lot of pollution. People in India should travel outside the country. I have lived and worked in Singapore, Malaysia and now Dubai. I have never seen the amount of poverty and pollution, as much as I have seen it in India. People don't respect the environment and it shows. Everywhere people are spitting, throwing rubbish without any care.

isha, not only that, it also means that we are settling for a poorer standard of health. I had routinely suffered from allergic cold, indigestion in whichever city of India i lived in, and did not suffer that when I moved outside India. People with asthma have a particularly tough time. Its not just the air, the water and food are also extremely polluted, with mixing of sewer lines and drinking water lines, water excess in chemicals or deficient in minerals, the list is endless..
