tamil is bigger than telugu, after tamil films around the world were not even hindi film runs, telgu market is full of contractor's black money those who are making telgu film for full filling other requirements.

Tamil-Telugu market comparison
by abc_xyz abc_xyz on Nov 06, 2012 08:38 PM  | Hide replies

Both the industries are huge and highly rofessional. They both churn out movies every weekend, both big and small and create quite a stir among the film-going audience. Here is my take on the market:

Small Movies - (Newcomers, less than 4 cr budget)
As far as small movies are concerned, Telugu market is much bigger than tamil, as telugu people in general are more movie-crazy than the rest of the country and woudn't even spare a small film for entertainment. These movies are confined to their respective states and have hardly any presence outside.
Medium movies ( Bankable stars/technisians, good off-beat stories, new attempts , 4- 12 cr budget)

Tamil films have a small edge over Telugu, as they get exposure in Kerala and overseas than Telugu medium budget movies.

Big Movies (superstars, hifi teams, 15 cr budget)

Big tamil films run big in TN/Kerala/Bangalore.
They get dubbed into Telugu and run resonably well. At times, they reach even the northern audience with the hindi dubbing and turn out average (Robot is a classic example). They also run well in overseas (Singapore, SriLanka, Malaysia, US). Take telugu movies, they run like anything in AP and KA and US and not much at other places. Hence Tamil filsm beat Telugu market comfortably. But of late, good telugu movies are getting dubbed and getting into Tamil market slowly, whihc is a welcome change.

Now a big surprise - The combined market of Tamil and Telugu industries is bigger than Bollwood.

Right comparo mate.. You hit the nail on the head..
Excellent analysis overall..

Please note that the biggest south indian movies in terms of budget and collections have been clearly Tamil.. globally...

Buget wise - Endhiran (135 crores); 7am Arivu (80 Cr); Dasavathaaram (60 cr); Sivaji (60 cr); Maattraan (60 Cr)

Collections wise - gross - Endhiran (375 Crores); Dasavathaaram (250 Crores).

No Telugu movie ever has even touched the budget of 60 crores so far.

The highest collecting Telugu movie ever in sheer numbers is Eega (170 Crores).

Hope the figures are good enough to make people clear about the maximum market available and the maximum risk taken confidently depending on the market...

Get your figures right dude! Dont belive in the hype and false budget figures. It does not even make any business sense to produce a movie with 180cr
for south market alone.
Do you know the number of theytres in AP? It is 2400 and where as in TN it is just less than 1000.
The market of telugu films is 150% higher than tamil films which compensates for foreign market of tamil films. Still telugu films have huge market in US than tamil.
Please dont even consider kerala market which is too small and falls below 5crs for a big star movie itself.
Do you know tamil dubbed movies are released much heavily in AP? Because of the maximum number of theatres and most of the small screens in AP want some content to run
these movie halls.
And the tax for dubbed movies is very less when compared to TN. Another factor is horrible dubbing of telugu films in tamil where as the quality of tamil dubbing in telugu is good.
Dont you see the popularity of telugu films in hindi channels? You can see the telugu films in all prime hindi channels anytime but not much of tamil films.

Do you seriously think the budget of enthiran is 180 cr? Shankar himself told during the audio release that the budget is 80 crs? How the budget skyrocketed in few days of the release? Do you know what is black money?
Cinema business is one way to convert black money in to white money and thats what Sun pictures do? Are you kidding me that enthiran collected 380 crs? The suns offical figure itslef excluding satellite rights is 190 crs? Where you got 380 crs from?
Just assume these figures. In telugu it done a business of 30 crs and the producer was crying later for the loss. If he has to make any profit on this investment the movie has to make atleast 100 crs profit? Did you forgot the distributrs, exhibitors, entertainment tax etc?
If enthiran makes 380 crores then eega must make almost same amount if not more as it released in more number of theatres than enthiran.
And there is no rule that any telugu movie should work in tamil or vice versa because you can not dictate the taste of the audience. Hence I dont want to discuss much about the content as both the industries have its own audience. This is my opinion as I work closely with both the industries.

Its not nonsense. Telugu industry is second to Bollywood in India. There are some big budget movies made in tamil and there are some big stars there also but overall, its smaller in production of number of movies and audience.

I partially agree with u... AP has around 1600 screens only while TN has around 900 screens. Areawise AP is twice bigger than TN.. AP market is bigger than any other indian states, but any one can make a money there. coz, telugu audience watch even kannada dubbing movies. for ex. Maatraan telugu version sold by 17 crores which is bigger than medium direct telugu films.. I think businesswise is same for big stars in both industries.. Tollywood market place is AP,KA, and US while Kollywood market is TN,KL,KA(not equal as AP),AP (considerable market) and overseas(Malaysia(main market), small markets(US,UK,Canada, singpore etc…) .. Even in quantity terms, kollywood was released more no of movies in 2010 than tollywood.. And any day Kollywood stands high in Quality than tollywood.. But u should not compare both industries, we are in one family..

Dude the no of screens in AP is 2400 and not 1600 as u said. Infact they were 3500 and were closed due to tax slabs. Are you kidding that telugu ppl watch kannada dubbing movies also? If some one releases a dubbing movie it does not mean ppl watch them.

Telugu Cinema is biggest and next only to hindi with the exception of rajnikanth. Even shankar has to leverage on telugu films to make his high budget movies.
