Aamir will have to take many births to touch srk's popularity and brand value.

SRK is a big HAM.... He does not know what under-playing is all about.
Akkineni Nageshwara Rao or also known as ANR played best ever acted role of Devdas. And Dilip Kumar is the second best. The telugu and hindi versions of Devdas are real classics, and the Sharukh Khan's Devdas is no where close to them. Many people have not watched the old classics, they should go and watch before commenting. And when did Time magazine become an authority on movies that there word has to be considered - they are one among the millions, expressing their view point.

I am not jealous. I would not have posted my comment had Swades been selected. Devdas was not great in any sense except for the money spent on it. Indian Cinema has a history of about 100 years. There are so many great movies. Devdas wouldn't make it even to Top 100 if a list were to be made on best Indian movies. I have seen all versions of Devdas and believe me this Devdas is very pretentious and artificial. Seeing the list of Richard Corliss I am really doubting if he has atleast seen all Hollywood classics.

Swadesh is one of the worst Indian movies and along goes with Lagaan the two foolish movies.Devdas is great, only the role played by Madhuri should have been better, she looks extremely fat and old and should have been replayed by some-one younger may be Rani Mukherjee who looks younger and at the same time a good actress.
Probably the Time team has not seen the Telugu version of Devdas by Vedantham Raghavaiah. Immortal classic. Even today the movie runs for 100 days wherever it is shown. Another classic is Viswanath's 'Sankarabharanam' which ran all over India for months on end even when people did not understand the language. There was hardly anyone that did not shed tears for the immortal character played by Somayajulu.

I beg to differ, though I am not a fan of SRK,but as a Bengali I have read the original book for Devdas written by Sarat Chandra Chottopadhay(Chatterjee, i have also seen the bad acting of Dilip Kumar in the older version, even I have watched the Bengali Devdas played by the renowned Saumitra Chatterjee(Devdas) and Uttam Kumar(the role played by Jackie Shroff) but all these players are legends in regional movies. But SRK is better than Dilip Kumar for sure and the direction was excellent,as a Bengali I was totally astonished by the movie. It depicted the real pomp and granduer of the Bengali Zaminders (in Dilip Kumar's Devdas that was totally absent) and Devdas is supposed to be of Western as well as Eastern mix, which is the speciality of Sarat Chandra Chatterjee the writer, but Dilip Kumar's Devdas was not able to potray that East-West mix as well as the pomp. For example, in the West drinking is a culture and if somebody drinks nobody will look at him as a bad person whereas in the East(India) it was considered a bad thing. There are thousands of such little details that was well picturized by Sarat Chandra in his book and that is the main concept in most of his books such as Bipradas where the religion and love for widow comes into play. Overall SRK and Sanjay L.Bansari..was great, the only thing would have been better is the replacement of Madhuri Dixit. She looks really old and during the dancing sequences her appearances were blunt specially because of Aisw..Rai.

Madhuri should have been replaced by a good actress and preferably a little younger who could stand infront of Ash Rai,because the role of Madhuri(originally she should be better looking than Paru-Ash but a little older than Paru).Rani Mukherjee could have been the perfect fit considering she is comfortable working with SRK in so many films and might have read the real Devdas written by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee. The script is very important in this case which I believe unknowingly SRK and Ash acted well without reading the real bengali version of Devdas. Ash and SRK and Sanjay.L.Bans..were really great and while watching the movie I never thought this movie is directed and acted by all non-bengalis who might not have read the original bengali literature by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee.Dilip Kumar's Devdas was really miserable and was extremely slow with very poor acting.A high voltage acting was needed which was rightly done by SRK,It reminds me of the last line written by Sarat Chandra about Devdas-"You cannot love him, hate him, sympathize with him or cannot ignore or neglect him"-and if you see SRK's acting it was that extra bit which keeps that punch in the entire movie and that was needed.Dilip Kumar poorly acted in Devdas's role.Overall I will consider Devdas as one of the milestone's in Bollywood Movie Industry,Far better than Swadesh and Lagaan and other meaning-less movies.
