In 70s,the knowledge of Hindi was very poor in South India.
Still the dialogues of Sholey became very popular.
May be Shole film was the fiirst Hindi film for majority of South Indians of that generation.

First of all define south indian.Because people of North Karnataka have been watching hindi films for decades.

V Shantaram was a kannadiga and Guru Dutt was a konkani from Karnataka.
